151076 Goodreads is removing multiple features. Here’s a summary of the announcement and a link to the details.

“ As part of our dedication to improving Goodreads, we are phasing out a number of features in order to focus on the ones our members use most, and continue to improve the overall Goodreads experience. As of July 5, 2022, Goodreads will no longer support the ability to create new content for the book reviews recommendations/recommenders section, favorite authors list, creative writing, the condition and details about owned books, friend stories, trivia, quizzes, and adding photos to books. These features will no longer be available on the site on Sept. 1, 2022.”

151076 Oh, me, too, Lauren!

FYI, I learned about the Newport mansions when I went to a Smithsonian seminar about them when I lived near Washington, DC. It took me over 10 years to go see them after seeing that seminar. Hubby was judging a stamp show in Providence and I tagged along, specifically to go to Newport. I went two days, one with hubby who could only make it through two homes. I saw a total of six.

151076 I live in NC and have visited Biltmore, which was built by a brother George, who needed a respite (believe it was asthma). He designed it to be bigger than the Newport house, which then spawned the construction of the one in Florida.

Robin, even knowing the history and the reasons behind them being built, I was utterly fascinated with those houses and loved them. It’s been at least ten years and I remember them vividly.

Sharon, they didn’t call these guys robber barons for nothing. They weren’t good men.

151076 Here’s the link to one of the sites. These were the “summer” homes and they were all trying to outdo each other. The Breakers, the biggest of them all, was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt.

151076 Ever heard of the castles of Newport? It was mind boggling how much money they spent building those houses in Rhode Island. Most everything used to build them was imported. They’re mammoth homes and it took us almost 2 hours/house to get through them. Ka-ching.

That book wrecked me.

I sort of didn't read the blurb. Have it on my tbr shelf and have been reading this author last few weeks. It's so wrong to ask but I..."

I did! Here’s the last paragraph of my review;

“ This is a well-told, fast-paced story with interesting characters and a pretty compelling romance. And, there was a bit of intrigue and suspense that cropped up about midway through the book.The ending came too soon for me as I wasn’t ready to let these people go. Just wish this was the beginning of a series (like I need another one!). ‘
