I have used Smashwords for my short story collection. Besides putting your book on their site, they will submit it to all of the major retailers, B&N, Apple, Kobo, etc. The only problem is that the traffic and search capabilities on the other sites doesn't compare to Amazon.
While I have had some sales on Smash and B&N, the total of all of them combined is less than Amazon.
Hopefully, SmashWords will someday be able to compete with Amazon, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

I tried it with one of my books to make sure it works. I was able to use the KDP dashboard after using Author Central to update my description.

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you about a recent update Amazon has made concerning its policy on posting descriptions to your product page.
In the past, once you have edited your description from Author Central, you can no longer use the KDP dashboard. Amazon has fixed this bug and you now can go back to using the KDP dashboard and use the heading tags in your description.
Thanks Amazon!
Now, if only they would fix the bug that won't allow you to use heading tags from Author Central.

You'll need to have your book removed from price matching first. You can try notifying Amazon through the product details page, but my experience has been that you have to contact them directly through customer service.

Yes, I've done this several times. Once Amazon takes you off the price-match, you can charge whatever you like.

Yes, it's been my experience that they are completely separate.

I'm in the US and it is listed as free.

Okay, we figured it out. You have to set up two separate countdown promotions to run at the same time, one for the US and one for the UK.
Michele wrote: "He should play around with the page there. You have to identify where you're doing it and schedule separately. I think it was a dropdown menu? If his book is priced now at the equivalent of 2.99, ..."

Has anyone had luck running a Countdown promotion simultaneously in the US and UK?
I'm trying to help an author in the UK and I've received this message from customer service, "you may schedule separate Countdown deals for the US and UK at the same time," but he hasn't been able to do it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim

Martyn, I'm sure that many indie authors will appreciate your detailed instructions. Thanks for sharing the information.
Jim

I have tried their service and didn't see any significant traffic.

Thanks for getting back to us with your update.

I think the Tweet with the award noted is more compelling.

Congratulations Jennifer, it sounds like your promotion was successful.

Sounds like your off to a good start, J.
Amber, I hope you get reviews for your book soon. I'm hoping Goodreads will start doing eBook giveaways soon.

Interesting, I have a book on B&N and Kobo, but it's through Smashwords and is the same version.

Thanks, Jenny. I'm going to Google for a short story fiction contest to enter. Wish me luck!
