My name is Valentina and live in germany, but mostly prefer to read in english. The only times I pick up german books is if they are originally written in german (•◡•) /.

Hi Valentina! Welcome!
I'm a huge classics lover: you're a Dostoevsky fan, I'm a Tolstoy's (I've read Anna Karenina multiple times and I think constantly about those characters... but I'm sure that when I'll have the time and peace of mind in order to start War and Peace I'll become obsessed with that novel as well).
Kafka is another author I love: The Castle is still one of those short story I think about even though I've read it years ago.
Hope you'll enjoy your time with us!

(this pic is from "the last station", movie dedicated to Tolstoy and his last years of life <3)

Beautiful.

Let me know through private message when you'd like to start and I'll join you: honestly, I really want to read it again soon ahaha

I started reading The Secret History without expectations...
'Cause I have the same problem as you've mentioned: when you set the bar so high, it's difficult not to be disappointed at the end.
I think it's a normal thing, don't worry about it.
I recommend this book specifically to people who enjoy the cultural side of Dark Academia: there are slow passages, where the author describes places/vibes/aesthetic/thoughts...
... but there's also suspense and romance and this sensual feeling that I have appreciated thoroughly.
It's a long novel but you'll fly through the first and last third of it. The middle part is the slowest one, where the main character evolves (regresses?) the most: it's necessary for the overall plot.
I honestly loved it: read it multiple times already and I'll read it again if anyone is interested in doing a "buddy read"!

“On my first night there, I sat on the bad during the twilight while the walls went slowly from gray to gold to black, listening to a soprano's voice climb dizzily up and down somewhere at the other end of the hall until at last the light was completely gone [...]"
― Donna Tartt, The Secret History

I'm in love with this quote from The Haunting of Hill House :
"Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it has stood for eighty ye..."
I haven't read The Haunting of Hill House yet... but from this quote, it sounds interesting and compelling. Thanks for sharing it!

A sweaty toothed mad man with a stare that pounds my brain.
His hands reach out and choke me, and all the time he's mumbling.
“Truth, truth.”
Like a blanket that always leaves your feet cold.
You push it, stretch it, but it'll never be enough.
You kick at it, beat it, it'll never cover any of us.
From the moment we enter crying,
to the moment we leave dying,
it'll just cover your face,
as you wail and cry and scream.”
― Tom Schulman, Dead Poets Society

The ones I love the most, I keep them in my heart (and in my mind) for a very long time.
Some of them, forever.
This is the right place where you can share yours.
I'll add mine.
♡♡♡

I've never read Armentrout before, probably because I've always seen as a YA author, which is not my cup of tea anymore. Are you enjoying it so far?

I wasn't into small town romances, until I meet Kristen Ashley: her books give me butterflies, honestly.
Loving

Me too, I see you girl. Ninth house should probably be read in a peaceful time, because a lot of people told me it's long and slow (but beautiful nonetheless).
Try something less demanding for now, maybe it could help!

I had a rough start as well... but we shouldn't stress about it. Really, we don't need that type of pressure.
Good luck with your current readings!

Hi Rianne, welcome in the group!
Your "favorites" list is perfect... also, I loved the The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue so much: I cried, laughed, and fell in love with those characters deeply.
One of the best readings of 2021, in my opinion. It has a Dark Academia vibe, melancholic and tragic and, somewhat, hopeful. I don't know, I think about that book till this day.

what are you reading right now?

i love reading fantasy but i've started reading romance books in the last few months and i love it. i also enjoy dark academia theme so much"
Hello, Zeynep... another dark academia lover, just like me.

So many new people here, great!
Pride & Prejudice will always have a special place in my heart, really. Such a moving and poignant story.
Anyway, I have my own copy of Ninth House but, again, it's sitting on my bookshelf since last year... I can't wait to get to it!
Let us know how you like it, when you'll finish it!
