He Fell Howling by Stephen Graham Jones DNFI made it halfway, somehow. Jezzuz, this was dark and ugly.
¡Cuidado! ¡Que Viene El Coco! by Carlos Hernandez ★½☆☆☆ DNFThat’s it, I made it halfway and that is quite enough! There are stories in the stories in the stories. This is not a good thing in a short story.

Wild to Covet by Sarah Gailey ★★★½☆
”This piece is about the way personal identity is subsumed by social expectations of motherhood. It is about the way people disappear under the weight of the label “mother,” and the way that disappearance comes as a relief to those who fear powerful women.”
The author’s intentions come through loud and clear, I just wish the story had been more fun.
Labbatu Takes Command of the Flagship Heaven Dwells Within by Arkady Martine ★★☆☆☆ Unsatisfying. That was slow, lacked cleverness, humor, romance, and/or action-sequences.
From atop the choppy waves to the choking darkness of the abyss, the seas are full of mystery and rife with tales of inexplicable events and encounters with the unknown. The supernatural is set alongside the grim affairs of sailors scorned in these salt-soaked tales, recovered from obscurity for the 21st century.
This book is only available in physical copy. I like that but I sincerely hope that everyone who voted for this book - Joseph, Horace, Trey, Angel, Ronald - have budgeted for this purchase and will be participating in the discussion.

A Brief Lesson in Native American Astronomy by Rebecca Roanhorse ★★★★☆
A Native American tale of obsessive love reimagined in cyberpunk!

The Butcher’s Table by Nathan Ballingrud ★★★★★
Hideous beauty, confronting and objectionable grace - everything I ever wanted from Clive Barker.
It’s great to see you here Latasha! I recently mentioned Kolchak to Fiona and remembered we watched that together!
It’s been a chore. I’m on chapter 3 of the final story and it might be the best one. I was going to say the shining light and that seemed as inaccurate as it is accurate - Satan, or rather Lucifer, means light bringer. The Butcher is a story of pirates, fantasy, cannibalism, lust, and odd religions. I have to sleep now but I am hooked on this dark weirdness!
Fisher-Bird by T. Kingfisher ★★☆☆☆ An exasperated everyman version of Hercules meets a bird that helps him poison other birds. That’s it. Nothing clever, nothing interesting.
The Justified by Ann Leckie DNFAllegedly from Egyptian mythos but it read nonsensically and I lost interest almost immediately. Damn shame.
That Was Always Going to Happen by Stephen Graham Jones ★★★☆☆ That was starting to get frightening when it ended. Abrupt.
