[close] The hedge is tall and uniform - offering nothing of what it conceals - a great wall of greenery that protects the mystery within. Tall, leafy trees stand sentry over these ramparts, their branches stretched like nets to keep out those brave enough to scale the defences; and yet, birds and squirrels flit about these lofty limbs - as interlopers or honoured guests, one cannot tell. A blaze of colour draws the eye, the crimson leaves of a maple peaking over the cedar trellis of an open gate. A pathway of dark flagstones spaced at a gait within a river of pea gravel invites you into the leafy palisade, then branches off in three directions. To the left, running along the banks of a creek that lazily tumbles down rock ledges and fallen branches, is a stand of trees. On the mossy ground below a magnificent willow sits a group of readers, engaged in animated discussion of their text. To the right, in a sunny glade replete with flowers in a riot of colours, more people laugh and tumble about as they play games and enjoy the weather. A tea house, open-faced and built of moss-infested timbers, provides warm cups and small treats. While down the middle, in the warzone between shade and sun, pockets of harrassed creatures find anywhere they can to sit, contemplate, and write what's in their hearts. Those braver, more gregarious souls even discuss what they've written, and ask for tips. It is a refuge. An idyll. A place of tranquility and purpose. It is a garden.
