[close] This group is designed to discuss books relating to mental illness and the effects it has on individuals.

[close] The Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award was initiated in 2000 to recognize authors, illustrators, and publishers of high quality fictional and biographical children, intermediate, and young adult books that appropriately portray individuals with developmental disabilities. The award is a collaborative work by members of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities (DADD), of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and the Special Needs Project (a distributor of books related to disability issues). Every even year, an award is presented to an author and illustrator (if appropriate) of a children's picture book, an intermediate, and/or a young adult book that includes appropriate portrayals of individuals with developmental disabilities. The Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award is making an impact toward the general public’s recognition of the positive societal contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities, greater understanding and acceptance of teachers and school-aged peers of students with developmental disabilities, and encouragement of authors and illustrators to publish quality literature including characters with developmental disabilities.

[close] Are you living with a disability, or know someone who is? Do you or someone you love struggle with a mental health condition like anxiety, schizophrenia, depression, or Asperger's syndrome? Or are you a student or professional in the field of disability or mental health? Then this book club might be for you! I'm hoping to use this Goodreads group as a public forum for discussions around the issues of disability, marginalization, freedom and dissent. In my opinion, issues of disability are intimately connected to the preservation of the social freedoms we all enjoy, as well as our continuing prosperity. If we could get the conversation around disability (physical, emotional and mental) right, many of the social problems we grapple with as a society would vanish. In this group, we'll read first-person narratives of disability and dissent, classics in the areas of political philosophy and metaphysics, and books on current and historical events. Particularly of interest are Western political philosophers from the 18th century onward, narratives of resistance (both fiction and nonfiction), comparative religion, and historical books about the Nazis.
