[close] Remember when literature died after 1930 because of radio and then TV and then VCRs and then the internet? I don't either! Let's explore together... Basically, I've noticed that all the really great books came out in the 20s. So I plan to read a) only books from the 1920s for 13 months starting Christmas week 2012 and ending the third week of January 2014, or b) 13 books from the 1920s over the course of 2013. Join me!

[close] Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is the classic detective and the prototype of many modern detective stories. Whether you are an old fan or looking to read the original stories for the first time, you can’t go wrong. We will discuss the original stories as well as talk about retellings in literature and television. Please watch movies and TV shows, either based directly on Sherlock Holmes, or ones that you think might have found some inspiration in Sherlock. There are several novels, many short stories, and some longer collections to choose from. Required reading will be A Study in Scarlet, a novel, and “A Scandal in Bohemia,” a short story. You are encouraged to read more if you would like, as the individual works are not long.

[close] This group is for those who want to read and encourage others to read all or some of the 30 books to be given away on World Book Night, US, 2013 before World Book Night happens on April 23, 2013. It's aim is help readers be prepared for April 24 so that when they see someone reading one of these books they can open a conversation that will encourage and foster a love of reading. The list of books is geared for a new book every week. Sometimes there will be two new books for a week to keep on pace. All books are being distributed in English; however, The House on Mango Street and The Alchemist are also being distributed in Spanish editions.
