If that is the case why did he put his father's bones back in the attic?
It's a while now since I read it - and it was a library book so I can't take it down from my own shelf and check - but my recollection is that he buried his father's bones after he retrieved them from the attic.
I agree with Frank's interpretation. And I thought he sent his father's remains off to sea before his final act.
I agree that he left OneEye to Run. It seems quite obvious to me: "The tiny figure on the cliffslope's edge ceases his watching and springs to his paws and sets off at a sprint. He is running, running, running. He is OneEye. He is on his way."
