I don't agree. I think Aaron is an all-round good - bland - guy who had to be convinced in Emily. Neither would kill. Emily had to resort to counselling to get over the Kirsten-inspired murders, like converting to another religion.
I listened to the audio book and the narrator made these sentences sound ominous. I think the author was attempting to go for "twisty"
In the first paragraph of the book, Emily foreshadows her own darkness stating that she was both concerned for Kristen on the edge of a patio where should could tip over and tumble, while also revealing her intrusive thought of pushing her herself. I don't doubt there's an implied darkness to Emily's character.
