Lance Morcan Excerpt from The Orphan Conspiracies: 29 Conspiracy Theories from The Orphan Trilogy:

In 1962, the US Government’s Department of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff proposed carrying out acts of terrorism on American soil to justify military intervention in Cuba.

Hard to swallow or believe, we know, but it’s on the record. Numerous military and intelligence documents recording these disturbing false flag proposals, known as Operation Northwoods, have since been declassified.

Operation Northwoods remained a secret for 35 years. The sinister proposal first came to the public’s attention in November 1997 when The John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Review Board declassified various top secret military records, which included the Northwoods documents. The following year, the National Security Archive published further revealing information on Northwoods.

A (since declassified) ‘Top Secret’ memo dated March 13, 1962, addressed to the Secretary of Defense and signed by then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff makes for interesting reading. Its subject line reads: Justification for US Military Intervention in Cuba.

Item No. 1 on that memo reads: “The Joint Chiefs of Staff have considered the attached Memorandum for the Chief of Operations, Cuba Project, which responds to a request of that office for brief but precise description of pretexts which would provide justification for US military intervention in Cuba.”

Operation Northwoods’ plans included the sinking of US war ships, shooting down hijacked passenger planes, killing innocent American citizens, letting off bombs and orchestrating other violent terrorist acts in major cities including Washington DC and Miami.

Every event would be blamed on Fidel Castro and the Cuban regime. The Joint Chiefs of Staff’s logic was that these events would help gain enough support from the American public and the world at large for a US military invasion of Cuba.

Fortunately, President Kennedy immediately rejected the Northwoods proposal and fired one of its main proponents, Lyman Lemnitzer, who was then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The following year, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while Lemnitzer was appointed Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.

Go figure!

In his 2001 book Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency from the Cold War Through the Dawn of a New Century, US political journalist and bestselling author James Bamford wrote that Operation Northwoods “called for innocent people to be shot on American streets; for boats carrying refugees fleeing Cuba to be sunk on the high seas; for a wave of violent terrorism to be launched in Washington, D.C., Miami, and elsewhere. People would be framed for bombings they did not commit; planes would be hijacked. Using phony evidence, all of it would be blamed on Castro, thus giving Lemnitzer and his cabal the excuse, as well as the public and international backing, they needed to launch their war”.

Sadly, Bamford is one of the few well-known political commentators to write about Operation Northwoods. When the documents were declassification in 1997, they were almost universally ignored by the media.

Apparently on-the-record discussions within the US Government about murdering its own citizens as propaganda to create a war were not deemed newsworthy.

The Orphan Conspiracies 29 Conspiracy Theories from The Orphan Trilogy by James Morcan

"Nine knew from experience it was simply about those powerful few, the secret elite, who manipulated the world’s nations. On his many international assignments over the years, he had discovered the so-called evil countries were all too often controlled by the same people who ran the countries fighting to liberate them." –The Ninth Orphan

Cosmic Arcata I have been studying The Catcher In The Rye in light of WW2. It was written in 1945,46 and 1951. They don't say what was changed from the articles written in Collier's and the New Yorker. But even so there is enough evidence to make me believe this was an allegory of WW2.
See:

Page 114 of the Catcher In The Rye:

Any way he references:

Who is supposed to sing a fictitious song "Little Shirley Bean".

This record becomes a broken record.

The song that I think he was alluding to by Fletcher is :

Evidently this was produced right before the last printing of The Catcher In The Rye. But like Shirley Temple's movie at least 6 years before we entered the war.

This record gets broke in "The Grand Army Mall" in Central Park...Thus a broken record that he presents as a present to Phoebe (Feeble).

Mikhayla Gracey The military seriously needs to be placed under the power of the people. The cases of rape in the military that are covered up are gross. That these cases are handled within the military is an example of a military that says, "give us your children" then does with our children what they see fit without consequence. Who knows exactly what happened on 9/11, but one thing is certain; the "investigation" is an example of disregard for intelligent inquiry in favor of pushing the notion that it is not the business of the American people to ask. The military needs to be redone.

Lance Morcan The rumors persist that 9/11 was an inside job: bombs, not planes, leveled Twin Towers; inside traders knew about the 9/11 attacks before they happened; Air Defense was ordered to stand down etc. etc.

As the rumor mill continues to churn out theories on what happened on that unforgettable day in 2001, a certain incident in US history that could have resulted in the officially sanctioned murders of countless American citizens becomes even more important.

The incident is of course ‘Operation Northwoods’ – an especially murky episode in American history.

After I saw the blast damage to the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City I decided that it was most likely an inside job. How can a truck detonate in front of a building and do NO damage across the street. I still think the government was behind it and Timothy McVeigh was a scapegoat. This resulted in the passing of Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996. Makes you wonder about 911 and all the things that have changed.

Mikhayla Gracey Apparently all votes are yes, it was an inside job. I agree, but that doesn't mean everyone in government was in on it. An inside job implies nothing more than that there are traitors in dangerous places. There most certainly are.

message 13: by James (new)

James Morcan The poll is still going, so let's see how the rest of the votes come in on the 9/11 inside job theory.

Not sure I agree with your narrow definition of an "Inside Job", Mikhayla. I think the modern definition of any inside job, and certainly the conspiracy definition of that phrase, can mean it is only certain senior members of any government or organization responsible for the crime.

Also, I've never heard any 9/11 truthers say the entire government carried out the attacks. That would be ridiculous...Anybody knows most public servants in any government are honest, people-serving individuals with no ulterior motives. That is definitely the case with US Governments from what I've observed.
It's usually the rotten eggs at or near the top, the ones who hold meaningful power, that spoil reputations of entire administrations.

Whoever is right on this definition of an Inside Job, it's merely semantics me thinks. A better thing to try to figure out is if some individuals on the inside of the US administration at the time of 9/11 really were responsible.

Mikhayla Gracey Right, James, being on top becomes a requirement to pull such a thing off. It's nice to have veto power via hierarchy. It would need to involve someone who can simply call and say call off the investigation, and it's done. What we need is rouge agents who have figures out that their boss is bogus.

What's weird is I've had several individuals with military/intelligence employment backgrounds write to me about Northwoods and say "So F#£<%~^ what?!" - meaning they think Northwoods is no big deal and that it does not indicate signs of corruption or that inside jobs concerning terrorism would be possible.

Martin Hill I'm not one who buys into the 9/11 conspiracy that says the Twin Towers were brought down by explosives. I do believe, however, the towers were destroyed by three separate conspiracies. The first, of course, is Al Qaeda's attack. But there were two other elements that, I believe, were even more insidious.

The first is that the Bush administration, despite numerous warnings that an attack was imminent, purposefully did nothing to stop it hoping to use a terrorist attack as a reason for starting a war with Iraq. We now know the administration received no fewer than 40 specific warnings about the pending attacks, including personal phone calls to Bush from the presidents of France and Russia, whose intel services had picked up information. Administration officials chose to ignore the warnings and not put the country's military and law enforcement apparatus on alert. In fact, Bush went on vacation and Cheney went into hiding.

Why would they be so irresponsible? Because the entire Bush administration came out of the Project for a New American Century, a neo-conservative think tank that had advocated for an invasion of Iraq since 1996. PNAC had issued a report saying the county needed "another Pearl Harbor event" for the country to rally around in order to make its plans for war possible. I don't think the administration expected the attacks to be as deadly as they actually were. And that bring us to the third conspiracy.

Being struck by a jet liner should not have brought down the Twin Towers. All modern skyscrapers are required to be built to withstand an impact by a jumbo jet. Aircraft slamming into tall buildings is not unknown. A B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building during WWII. However, an investigation into the collapse of the towers found there was a massive flaw in their design. In order to have their famous glass façade, the buildings were built with a cantilevered design, with all support structures running through the middle of buildings with virtually no support from the outer walls. The elevators also ran through this central support core. Whether no one noticed this vulnerability during the planning and approval stages, or money was passed under the table, I don't know. But the buildings should never have been built.

When the jets crashed into the building, they had full fuel loads onboard. Most of that flaming fuel poured into the center support area of the buildings, and the elevator shafts, and the heat weakened the support structure, resulting in the top to bottom collapse of the buildings. (Either Time or Newsweek ran an excellent report on this at the time.)

I don't necessarily believe the explosives theory either.

I think your theories or opinion on the various events that occurred before or on 9/11 probably still add to some kind of "inside job" on some level.

There are various types of false flag operations, as you know. Some are very blatant and carried out 100% by those engineering things in their favor. This is the only sort of inside job most of the public imagine and that probably explains why so many instantly dismiss 9/11 inside job theories.

On other occasions, however, a false flag operation can involve much subtler measures yet equally lethal and equally as useful to warmongers. Turning a blind eye to a coming attack and doing nothing to prevent it, would be another type of subtle inside job. One example of this in history is the burning down of the Reichstag, the seat of the German parliament, in 1933, which allowed Hitler to sweep into power in a sea of Communist fear or a "Red scare". This event was successfully blamed on Communists at the time but in the decades since the vast majority of historians now believe it was an incident "allowed to occur" by the Nazis (even though the Nazis didn't lift a finger to set the building alight, they just turned a blind eye and cleared the path for the terrorist): https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Now "clearing the path" for terrorists sounds very similar to a lot of the accounts from ex-govt employees and ex-CIA/ex-FBI whistleblowers (like Sibel Edmonds) where they state that the CIA/FBI/Pentagon definitely knew of the coming attacks. Clearing the path also sounds similar to all the govt whistleblowers who have said the NORAD pilots were all told to stand down on 9/11...not to mention the numerous airforce and other military/police training drills that all happened to be occurring on the morning of 9/11.

And yes, the Neo-Cons' Project for a New American Century has been cited by many investigators who believe 9/11 was some kind of inside job - the Project does seem to clearly state there needed to be a massive attack on US soil to convince the public to support further (highly-profitable) wars in the Middle East.

Those who say there's no smoking gun to prove 9/11 is an inside job are right.
However, those who say there's a mountain of evidence (such as Building 7 anomalies) that the official 9/11 Commission Report refused to look at, are also correct.

Daniel Diaz The 'Northwoods' project itself was of course rejected, but there has been a huge set of 'false flag' terrorist attacks that have been either government-staged, or at least state-endorsed/encouraged/permitted. http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2015/0...

I agree with Martin's point (and also Lance's point), that the attacks on the Twin Towers were not necessarily an inside job, but that there was intentional neglect, in terms of standing down, in terms of permitting the attacks to happen, and even a complicity on the part of the media (see the WTC7 reporting prior to it happening). The fact that the CIA had offices in WTC7 is another intriguing piece of the strange incidents involving that building.

The ONE strong argument against this is that, given the huge number of leaks and whistleblowing, and the scale necessary for an operation such as this, it seems odd that we have had no whistleblowers or 'deep throat' suggestions of blame associated with any senior officials associated with this. It seems more likely that this was understood as a threat, but no action was taken - either through ignorance or intentionally.

I actually wrote a (fictional) novel named 'Northwoods' (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B014JF9F1Q) that ties in loosely to this history and the 9/11 attacks. It is a thriller, so only cursorily deals with the history of 'Northwoods', but might be of interest.

Paul Sayers False flags, corrupt government, evil cabals and assorted nasties --- part of nature, as real as street bandits. So we're well advised to not be naive.

But how to survive, to thrive, to advance the cause of Justice?

The Nazis used false flag ops - their procession to the gallows at Nuremberg was lined with the memory of them like accusing guards. The Lord's Justice was not so very long in coming.

Neither have more recent hidden crimes escaped notice.

The US, newly emerged world super power after WWII absorbed many Nazi ideas (the moon shots, human experiments ...), and inherited the Nazi passion for extending world hegemony. It's just that, generally, they've been less forward about it ...

message 32: by David (new)

David Philips It always occurred to me why Hanoi didn't take the war to American soil during the Vietnam war. After all, the U.S. was trying to bomb North Vietnam back to the stone age, so it would be hard to blame the Vietcong for reciprocating, and mounting terrorist style raids on American cities. Taking this logic one stage further, why didn't a covert "Northwoods" style operation bomb their own cities and blame it on Ho Chi Minh? The reason is quite simple. It would make the general American population feel so vulnerable to attack, and so defenseless, that it wouldn't be long before some hotheads would be calling for an even greater escalation to the conflict which would undoubtedly involve a nuclear solution.
This is why I personally take a "Northwoods" type intervention on home turf with a rather large pinch of salt, despite all the documentation purporting to support it's authenticity.
And if I may digress for a moment or two, it's also why George Bush Sr. didn't march down Baghdad High Street at the end of the First Gulf War, despite having trounced Saddam's army very soundly. He was well aware that taking out Saddam wouldn't solve anything, a lesson his son didn't seem to learn after the end of G.W.II.
Once we open Pandora's Box, all sorts of nasties crawl out, and I believe the American military and intelligence community foresaw public reaction, were they to have gone down the "let's bomb ourselves and blame it on the other guys" route.
Am I totally wrong here?
And what would happen if we could get definitive proof of those regimes who were financing the current bogeymen, i.e. ISIS and Al Qaeda? Would the U.S. respond to a terrorist attack by bombing those countries who fund the perpetrators? It is quite likely, of course, that they already know who is backing them.
All sorts of permutations to consider there.
Well I'm done.
Thanks for letting me have my rant.

I see that book was published in 1975.

Operation Northwoods was of course 1962, but only declassified (accidentally) in 1998.

The Northwoods' documents did mention "flying planes into buildings" in key US cities and that the planes would be controlled remotely and be military planes made to look like passenger planes, if memory serves me correctly.

Makes you think...if the US Joint Chiefs of Staff were unanimously certain they could get away with terrorism against their fellow Americans way back in 1962 with their comparatively low-level technology, I wonder what they could have gotten away with in 2001...or now!

James Morcan For me, possibly the most important point about the 1962 Operation Northwoods documents in relation to the 9/11 attacks is this:
The Northwoods documents proposed that the supposedly hijacked (by terrorists) passenger planes will be flown into buildings in US cities, those planes would actually be replaced by unmanned drones. These remote controlled planes would have been made to look like the original passenger planes...

Drones?! I hear you say.
Drones???? in 1962?

Yeah, drones did exist in this era and had even been classified by then.

The documents: http://nsarchive.gwu.edu/news/20010430/

From the National Security Archive (http://nsarchive.gwu.edu): In his new exposé of the National Security Agency entitled Body of Secrets, author James Bamford highlights a set of proposals on Cuba by the Joint Chiefs of Staff codenamed OPERATION NORTHWOODS. This document, titled “Justification for U.S. Military Intervention in Cuba” was provided by the JCS to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962, as the key component of Northwoods. Written in response to a request from the Chief of the Cuba Project, Col. Edward Lansdale, the Top Secret memorandum describes U.S. plans to covertly engineer various pretexts that would justify a U.S. invasion of Cuba. These proposals - part of a secret anti-Castro program known as Operation Mongoose - included staging the assassinations of Cubans living in the United States, developing a fake “Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington,” including “sink[ing] a boatload of Cuban refugees (real or simulated),” faking a Cuban airforce attack on a civilian jetliner, and concocting a “Remember the Maine” incident by blowing up a U.S. ship in Cuban waters and then blaming the incident on Cuban sabotage. Bamford himself writes that Operation Northwoods “may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government.”

This audio book was narrated by Chris Abernathy (https://www.fiverr.com/provoman) and produced by D. Giglio for 'Our Hidden History'.

Kennedy personally rejected the Northwoods proposal, and it would now be the Joint Chiefs' turn to incur his displeasure. A JCS/Pentagon document (Ed Lansdale memo) dated 16 March 1962 titled MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT, 16 MARCH 1962 reads: "General Lemnitzer commented that the military had contingency plans for U.S. intervention. Also it had plans for creating plausible pretexts to use force, with the pretext either attacks on U.S. aircraft or a Cuban action in Latin America for which we could retaliate. The President said bluntly that we were not discussing the use of military force, that General Lemnitzer might find the U.S so engaged in Berlin or elsewhere that he couldn't use the contemplated 4 divisions in Cuba."[15] The proposal was sent for approval to the Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, but was not implemented.

Following presentation of the Northwoods plan, Kennedy removed Lemnitzer as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, although he became Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in January 1963. American armed forces leaders began to perceive Kennedy as going soft on Cuba, and the President became increasingly unpopular with the military, a rift that came to a head during Kennedy's disagreements with the service chiefs over the Cuban Missile Crisis.[citation needed]

On 3 August 2001, the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba (the main legislative body of the Republic of Cuba) issued a statement referring to Operation Northwoods and Operation Mongoose wherein it condemned such U.S. government plan.

message 45: by James (new)

James Morcan ABC News on Operation Northwoods (one of the rarer times mainstream media has reported on it...): http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=926...

Here is this ABC News article in full:

In the early 1960s, America's top military leaders reportedly drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba.

Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.

The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.

America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

Details of the plans are described in Body of Secrets (Doubleday), a new book by investigative reporter James Bamford about the history of America's largest spy agency, the National Security Agency. However, the plans were not connected to the agency, he notes.

The plans had the written approval of all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and were presented to President Kennedy's defense secretary, Robert McNamara, in March 1962. But they apparently were rejected by the civilian leadership and have gone undisclosed for nearly 40 years.

"These were Joint Chiefs of Staff documents. The reason these were held secret for so long is the Joint Chiefs never wanted to give these up because they were so embarrassing," Bamford told ABCNEWS.com.

"The whole point of a democracy is to have leaders responding to the public will, and here this is the complete reverse, the military trying to trick the American people into a war that they want but that nobody else wants."

Gunning for War

The documents show "the Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government," writes Bamford.

The Joint Chiefs even proposed using the potential death of astronaut John Glenn during the first attempt to put an American into orbit as a false pretext for war with Cuba, the documents show.

Should the rocket explode and kill Glenn, they wrote, "the objective is to provide irrevocable proof … that the fault lies with the Communists et all Cuba [sic]."

The plans were motivated by an intense desire among senior military leaders to depose Castro, who seized power in 1959 to become the first communist leader in the Western Hemisphere — only 90 miles from U.S. shores.

The earlier CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles had been a disastrous failure, in which the military was not allowed to provide firepower. The military leaders now wanted a shot at it.

"The whole thing was so bizarre," says Bamford, noting public and international support would be needed for an invasion, but apparently neither the American public, nor the Cuban public, wanted to see U.S. troops deployed to drive out Castro.

Reflecting this, the U.S. plan called for establishing prolonged military — not democratic — control over the island nation after the invasion.

"That's what we're supposed to be freeing them from," Bamford says. "The only way we would have succeeded is by doing exactly what the Russians were doing all over the world, by imposing a government by tyranny, basically what we were accusing Castro himself of doing."

'Over the Edge'

The Joint Chiefs at the time were headed by Eisenhower appointee Army Gen. Lyman L. Lemnitzer, who, with the signed plans in hand made a pitch to McNamara on March 13, 1962, recommending Operation Northwoods be run by the military.

Whether the Joint Chiefs' plans were rejected by McNamara in the meeting is not clear. But three days later, President Kennedy told Lemnitzer directly there was virtually no possibility of ever using overt force to take Cuba, Bamford reports. Within months, Lemnitzer would be denied another term as chairman and transferred to another job.

The secret plans came at a time when there was distrust in the military leadership about their civilian leadership, with leaders in the Kennedy administration viewed as too liberal, insufficiently experienced and soft on communism. At the same time, however, there real were concerns in American society about their military overstepping its bounds.

There were reports U.S. military leaders had encouraged their subordinates to vote conservative during the election.

And at least two popular books were published focusing on a right-wing military leadership pushing the limits against government policy of the day.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee published its own report on right-wing extremism in the military, warning a "considerable danger" in the "education and propaganda activities of military personnel" had been uncovered. The committee even called for an examination of any ties between Lemnitzer and right-wing groups. But Congress didn't get wind of Northwoods, says Bamford.

"Although no one in Congress could have known at the time," he writes, "Lemnitzer and the Joint Chiefs had quietly slipped over the edge."

Even after Lemnitzer was gone, he writes, the Joint Chiefs continued to plan "pretext" operations at least through 1963.

One idea was to create a war between Cuba and another Latin American country so that the United States could intervene. Another was to pay someone in the Castro government to attack U.S. forces at the Guantanamo naval base — an act, which Bamford notes, would have amounted to treason. And another was to fly low level U-2 flights over Cuba, with the intention of having one shot down as a pretext for a war.

"There really was a worry at the time about the military going off crazy and they did, but they never succeeded, but it wasn't for lack of trying," he says.

After 40 Years

Ironically, the documents came to light, says Bamford, in part because of the 1992 Oliver Stone film JFK, which examined the possibility of a conspiracy behind the assassination of President Kennedy.

As public interest in the assassination swelled after JFK's release, Congress passed a law designed to increase the public's access to government records related to the assassination.

The author says a friend on the board tipped him off to the documents.

Afraid of a congressional investigation, Lemnitzer had ordered all Joint Chiefs documents related to the Bay of Pigs destroyed, says Bamford. But somehow, these remained.

"The scary thing is none of this stuff comes out until 40 years after," says Bamford.

Lance Morcan REVEALED: The shock US plot to carry out secret terrorist attacks in America http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/lates...

Operation Northwoods was not the only dirty trick the US Department of Defence attempted to pull.

Twelve other proposals to "provoke, harass or disrupt Cuba" including creating "an incident which has the appearance of an attack on US facilities in Cuba, thus providing an excuse for use of US military might to overthrow the current government of Cuba" circulated.

Another – literally called Operation Dirty Trick – plotted to blame Castro if the Mercury planned space flight crashed: "The objective is to proved irrevocable proof that, should the Mercury manned orbit flight fail, the fault lies with the communists et al.

"This is to be accomplished by manufacturing various pieces of evidence which would prove electronic interference on the part of the Cubans."

One proposal called Operation Mongoose attempted to con Brits into supporting a war against Castro by having Jamaica and Trinidad-Tobago – which were both British Commonwealth at the time – attacked.

Ken Lance wrote: "As the rumor mill continues to churn out theories on what happened on that unforgettable day in 2001, a certain incident in US history that could have resulted in the officially sanctioned murders of countless American citizens becomes even more important.
The incident is of course ‘Operation Northwoods’ – an especially murky episode in American history."

Having joined this discussion at a late stage, I looked up the full text of Operation Northwoods:
http://www.archive.org/stream/Operati...

The relevant section is "Pretexts to justify US military intervention in Cuba".

The only mention I can find of attacking targets in the US is: "Exploding a few plastic bombs in carefully chosen spots". This appears to relate to the proposal: "We could foster attempts on lives of Cuban refugees in the United States even to the extent of wounding."

Am I missing something?

Ken James wrote: "The Northwoods documents proposed that the supposedly hijacked (by terrorists) passenger planes will be flown into buildings in US cities"

I can find no mention of flying planes into buildings in the Northwoods documents.
