Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts for the first six books of the Harry Potter series, though he is killed at the end of the sixth. He knew Voldemort as Tom Riddle when Riddle was a student at Hogwarts, and calls him Tom to his face.
When Dumbledore's little sister Ariana was six she was attacked by muggle boys who had seen her practicing her unmastered magical abilities. In response, Dumbledore's father attacked the boys and was sent to Azkaban for life, and the family never revealed what the boys had done to Ariana for fear of her being taken to a mental facility. Dumbledore also had a younger brother Aberforth, who ended up as barkeep of the Hog's Head. Ariana died in the midst of a three-way battle between her brothers and a friend of Albus's, Grindelwald. Grindelwald and Albus had planned to find the Deathly Hallows, overthrow the wizard secrecy and rule over muggle society.
