Light Yagami is one of the top high school students in Japan. When he discovers the Death Note of a shinigami (a Japanese god of death), he decides to use it to kill all violent criminals in the world. He leads a double life; to his family, he is a normal teenager, but he secretly assumes the guise of "Kira", a radical assassin who can kill criminals with the knowledge of only their name and their face. His arch nemesis is the investigator known only as L, who believes that killing criminals is evil and is bent on catching Kira.
