Benjamin Spence was a Jewish interpreter with the Company of Scotland's 1698 expedition to establish a trading colony at Darien in Panama. He had previously worked in customs enforcement in London.
On 5 August 1699, after the colony was abandoned, Spence was captured by the Spanish when the Unicorn put a boat ashore in the Bay of Matanzas, Cuba, in an attempt to replenish the ship's water supply.
In October 1699, along with 4 other colonists, Spence was sent for trial in Seville, and was one of those sentenced to death by the Casa de la Contratación in June 1700. Diplomatic negotiations between William III and Carlos II led to the prisoners being remanded to the British sovereign for assured and appropriate justice and they were subsequently released. …more
