I'm Carol Anne Shaw, and I write books for young people (mostly). I love the outdoors, musty bookstores, good coffee, hearty soups, and, of course, Marmite.

I live in Cobble Hill, a rural community in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, with my partner Richard and our beagle, Gordie.

My debut novel, Hannah & the Spindle Whorl, is set in Cowichan Bay, BC, and won a silver Moonbeam Award for Best Historical Fiction. The second book in the series, Hannah & the Salish Sea, was published in 2013, followed by Hannah & the Wild Woods in 2015 which earned the Chocolate Lily Award for BC's Best Novel. The series is publshed by Ronsdale Press.

I have also independently published four YA novels: The Peculiar Language of Llamas, The Picasso Project,

How did I miss this question? I'm so sorry.
Thank you for your kind words about my first book. It was inspired by my home's surroundings in the Cowichan Valley. I've always been interested in local history, and I wanted to write a book for young readers that would (hopefully) jumpstart their curiosity, too!(less)

LITTLE STORIES WITH BIG HEARTS

ZIPPO Hello there. It 's been a while. Months, in fact. But lately I've been feeling the pull to "blog" again. Do people still blog? I know I still read them. Sure, I like YouTube and Spotify for podcasts, but there's something wonderfully "un-noisy" about a favourite blog. I can settle in and enjoy it. There wont' be any ads. There is no infinite scroll. I read the entry. Enjoy it. And then go do Read more of this blog post »

“I tapped a few keys, wrote, 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life,' and stared at the sentence. Who had initially said that? Honestly, it wasn’t all that inspirational. If you were in a really dark place facing an even darker future—for example, held hostage in a mountain cabin by a serial killer—wouldn't a message like that make you want to slit your wrists? (Natalie - Secondary Feathers)”
Carol Anne Shaw, Secondary Feathers

“The first time I thought I was in love with Mitchell, it was raining. Not in a romantic, Jane Austen kind of way—just a steady, inconvenient drizzle that made my feet wet and my hair frizz. We were standing outside a coffee shop after a long, overly intellectual conversation about some book he had bought about Japanese culture, and I remember laughing too loudly at something he said that wasn’t really funny. In hindsight, I realize I wasn’t in love—I was just relieved. Relieved that Mitchell Simon seemed to want me. Relieved that someone like him, with his carefully pressed shirts, strict routines and iron-clad opinions, had chosen me. I mistook that relief for love. I knew better now.”
Carol Anne Shaw, Secondary Feathers

“I wish when I ran away to start over, I'd actually started, instead of stalling, and I'd never had a reason to look back.”
Allison Larkin, Home of the American Circus

“I stare at the chipped, black polish on her chewed fingernails and try so hard not to cry. I was going to be there for all of it. I wanted to be.

When I look up, her eyes are teary, too. She was like that when she was little; we’re both like that. If we’re not actively trying to block out the feelings of the people around us, they seep in and hurt like our own. Or, maybe she’s having her own feelings now—maybe I’m feeling some of hers.”
Allison Larkin, Home of the American Circus
