I thought he was more and more objectionable as the book went on (the guy was a lunatic) and the 14 year old relative was the culmination for me - I truly felt disgusted. Maybe that was the point and is definitely the sign of a good writer - but I couldn't help but feel that to write about a man like that you had to somewhat think like a man like that. It was a very male ego book, to be sure. It left me discontented. Again, probably a good work of literature to be able to create so strong a feeling. Another thing I was trying to bear in mind is that 15 was a normal age to get married 100 years ago - but still. The scene and imagery was revolting.(less)

If you had asked which character I most admired it would be Leona Cassiano because she was smart, shrewd, and intelligent. She was smarter than Florentino gave her credit for being and she garnered the respect of the R.C.C. because of her intelligence and her focus. Of course the deference she showed to the officers of the business was clearly because of custom (she was a woman and a woman of color at that!) The way she cared for F.A. when he aged might mean that she truly loved him (as he truly loved her!) because why else would she bathe him, give him enemas, etc.? (less)
