This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[In Chapter 64, Violet is desperately trying to imbue the mended wardstone with her own power, even if it kills her, and she sees the Sage with the staff advancing on Xaden in the distance. Violet basically chooses death as she approaches burn out, knowing she won’t last much longer as she basically says her goodbyes to Tairn and Andarna, as she continues pouring her power into the wardstone, with the intent that getting the wards up will save everyone else.

After her mom knocks Violet off the wardstone, on page 613, Violet feels down the bond that Xaden is dying, and through the bond feels: “I’m dying on the battlefield, the last of my strength fading, burning, consuming my body. But it will be worth it to save the one I love. Violet.” I think this quote is Xaden’s thoughts in Violet’s head, through the bond.

In Chapter 66, from Xaden’s point of view, the Sage has Xaden suspended in midair and Xaden is in burnout. Xaden says what is happening is exactly what is in his nightmares—which sound just like Violet’s in Chapter 52. “So, I’m going to give you one last chance to make the right choice so we can get this over with,” the Sage says. Then, through the bond, Xaden feels that Violet is dying because she’s sacrificing herself to imbue the wardstone, and the Sage tells Xaden that he’s going after Violet next after he kills Xaden.

The Sage is too strong and Xaden is too weak, approaching burnout, and Xaden ends up drawing power from the ground on page 622: He’s too strong, and I have nothing left. But I’ll be damned if Violet suffers the consequences. He won’t get his hands on her. Not today. Not ever. The slush beneath my hand melts, and I feel… There’s something beneath me. A steady flow of unmistakable…power. “You cannot!” Sgaeyl shrieks. “I chose you!” But Violet chose me too. I reach.

So, basically, Xaden couldn’t defeat the Sage and panicked when he felt Violet dying and the threat of the Sage going after her, so Xaden drew power from the ground which turned him into venin. (hide spoiler)]

✨Archie✨ He knows it’s waiting for him because it’s mentioned in the last chapter (Xadens POV) that Xaden and the Sage/General once told him that “he’d turn fo…moreHe knows it’s waiting for him because it’s mentioned in the last chapter (Xadens POV) that Xaden and the Sage/General once told him that “he’d turn for love”. Xaden tries to argue this point saying that the Sage doesn’t know him but he counters with “I know more than you think.” I have a theory that the Sage is Xadens dad or that maybe Xadens mom turned (and that’s why no one knows where she is) so maybe the Sage knows his mom.

I think that explains the dreams as well. I think he’s previously connected to the vennin somehow other than being at Resson.

Either way I’m so upset haha can’t wait for the next book. So many questions.(less)
