In chapter 24 Pendergast and D'Agosta are in a restaurant in Sunflower, Louisiana trying to find out why Helen had visited the town some years ago. Pendergast asks a waitress about a family named Doane she responds with shock and anger. Pendergast tells D'Agosta that everyone in town reacted the same way when asked about the Doanes. But this is the first mention of the name in the book. Did I miss something?

However, how the "Doane" family came up in the investigation is in the same chapter (chapter 24). Pendergast mentions that he talked with an elderly gentleman. It is not clear, but apparently in this conversation that the gentleman had inadvertently dropped the name of the "Doane" family which Pendergast picked up on.(less)

Did I miss it, or did the authors never explain what the fellow in the beginning of the book said to Pendergast's wife to make her go so pale and clam up, just before they left to find the lion. Maybe in a later book?
