On one hand it seems far away and on the other... well, it's like they're just down the road since everyone and their great Uncle Abbott will recognize them still, eight years later and Cooper now with a shaggy beard covering his face and Finch no longer an infant.

As for Scotland recognizing him and having all those newspapers, I felt like that was just put in to add "suspense" (that wasn't really suspense). Like, OMG, is Scotland going to turn him in???

The kidnapping maybe was enough to warrant national coverage, and if so, they could have been far away (Jake "has to drive all day to get here" after all, and he presumably lives near where Cooper did. Also, Scotland saw Cooper right after this happened so it's feasible he recognized him. But I still didn't think it was anything but something that was supposed to keep the reader on their toes, wondering if Scotland will finally turn him in.

However, how unlikely is it that the police, searching for Cooper, never thought to look in the remote cabin owned by his only friend? That's a pretty high level of incompetency if you ask me. That would have been one of the first places they looked. The fact that they didn't makes it seem like Jake's cabin was far, far away, in another country perhaps, that they never learned he owned a cabin and if they did, it was too far away (on the moon?) to search it ..... Cooper's early life wasn't easy, he only had a high school education, then roughed around in the military for a few years, & he only read "highbrow" books later on because they were left in the cabin. So his incorrect grammar may be authentic, but the rest of his narration was so articulate, I agree it was glaring! (less)
