Maybe something like motor neurone disease (ALS)?(less)

If you are ok to read a story in this setting and not worry to much about the who are the main characters and their background then I don't think it's a problem. I suspect this would be at least a little frustrating, although I've picked and read stories in a series out of order in the past.

However, if you want to understand the basic premise, then you ought to read at least the first story Rovers of London, although that wont provide all of the necessary background that comes up, in passing, in this story.(less)
