i'm thinking of branching into cop fiction as a bit of a direction change from what i normally read . Has anyone read The Onion Field? I remember catching the tail end of a conversation about it on our public broadcast channel and the conversation about Wambaugh just now reminded me about it. Is it a worth a read?

Who was the person taking Campbell's watch in to be repaired at the very end of the book? I am absolutely baffled at this. Was it Wambaugh? Was it a relative of Campbell's? Was it Hettinger? I noted that in the middle of the book Wambaugh was obliquely referring to himself in another scene (or so I gathered.) This is bugging me, because I paid attention, but I have no idea what this was about.
