Sex and gore is probably what got me more interested in reading. I went from remedial reader in elementary school to English Major because I discovered the types of books I found compelling. My early forays into the world of reading started with R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike. Better they read books with violence and sex than become mindless internet zombies like most kids these days. These were the books that introduced me to urban fantasy and I've yet to find another series that I like as much. At the time, the first book in the series felt to me like a PI novel written by some college student. Turns out that's exactly what it was. It really does get better. The writing is a little better in book 2, though I didn't like the plot as much (never been into werewolves). For me, the series picked up in book 3 and I fell in love in book 4 (I've seen others say book 5). I'd say skip to there if you really want to see if you like it, but there are SO many important things that happen in book 3, it would really be a shame for you to not know about the various (metaphorical) locks when Dresden finally picks up the key books down the series.

And if that's not enough to convince you, consider this line: "Here's something else I bet you didn't know about Tyrannosaurs: they don't corner well." Whatever you're thinking might lead to that, it's more awesome and entertaining. (less)

These books are clearly targeted at the 15 to 25 year old hetero male demographic. (less)

U may find it a little hard to understand for first few pages but don't get intimidated by that because the author is not really into using synonyms words. once u get hold on to this newly found words it will get much easier. Although the storyline is pretty solid but he tried to make it simple enough to be understandable by all segment of reader regardless of their reading level. I hope u will find my opinion helpful and i didn't offended u or anyone else in the process.(less)

Just be aware that the series does build on events and everything is related. so you could read books 4-8 and really get to love Dresden, and then go back and read the first 3 with a different understanding of him. Mr Butcher himself tells the story of how he wrote the first book as part of a college writing assignment!
Also, consider the audiobooks! James Masters of Buffy fame reads them, and he also takes a few books to settle into the character. But once he does...WOW!!(less)
