Is the SJW theme + republicans are homicidal gun toting backwards imbeciles theme that comes up for real or is it satire? Doesn't read like anything nuanced or satirical at all for now. I've stomached this nonsense for a few pages, but I'll be moving on to another book if that nonsense is written seriously.

Is this book connected to REAMDE? I'm seeing several people mention it, but I haven't seen anything online about it for sure. Do I need to read REAMDE before this?

Yeah, that's about 5000 pages of prior reading, but Stephenson makes it pretty fun. And you definitely have the option of just reading Fall as a standalone novel. Ignorance may be bliss! While there are quite a few characters from Cryptonomicon, and of course many from REAMDE, there is one particular character who ties this all together.(less)

It's very helpful to know their backstories. (I also thought it a much better book - that fact helped carry me through Fall)(less)

Can anyone posit any theories on what Elmo Shepherd's grand plan was to make bitworld 'better and improved' than meatspace? If he believed that Dodge got it wrong, he must have had some rally-worthy ideas to get his whole org, legal, resources behind him - aside from "I want to be god and enslave the minions"
