Yeah, that's about 5000 pages of prior reading, but Stephenson makes it pretty fun. And you definitely have the option of just reading Fall as a standalone novel. Ignorance may be bliss! While there are quite a few characters from Cryptonomicon, and of course many from REAMDE, there is one particular character who ties this all together.(less)

Reamde has wonderful characters in it, many of whom continue in Fall. However, Fall doesn't really flesh out any of its characters. Sophia has the best characterization; she isn't in Reamde. It's very helpful to know their backstories. (I also thought it a much better book - that fact helped carry me through Fall)(less)
