I'm only about 50 pages in and so far it's not really doing a whole lot for me but I see such incredible reviews. Does the book get better as it goes or am I just missing the point if it doesn't grip me straight from the get-go?

But I've been trying to read all the reviews, good or bad, and some of the readers have said that it took them a while to get into it, especially because there are so many characters to get to know, but that the second half and the ending are what made them love it. Haven’t read yet, haven’t decided if I will. How is the autism rep? I don’t like how from the blurb says autism needs a cure. Is the viewpoint changed throughout? Were any autistics consulted in the making of this book? Any ableism? This is important to me and my decision whether or not I’ll risk reading it.

Why was the book set in 2008 and 2009 instead of the present day? I thought maybe it was that the HBOT treatment may have been a fad, but HBOT is apparently still used today. I wondered if it was because cell tower pings are used to prove people's locations (which I know from the Serial podcast has been discredited), but then that was not a turning point. So I'm left wondering--why is this book set in the recent past?
