I have spoken at book clubs of tweens who've read it, and I would have read it at twelve, but that doesn't mean it's right for every twelve year old. There's no sex or sexual violence, but it is a darker book with plenty of violence/dissections/etc. Some kids just aren't ready for that yet, they need a few more years. So all I can say is: Use your best judgement.(less)

There are some scenes of violence, and some scenes that are a bit gory (the main character does dissect bodies) and the main characters are pretty morally grey.

If that's the case, and you want to know what age group this book is for, it's for a YA audience. (I think adults of any age could also enjoy it).

That said, having read it, I think that there are a lot of themes that are very mature, so I think I would only let a mature teenager read this book. 15+, and anyone who is 15 or 16 should be a MATURE 15 or 16 year old.

Because this book is amazing, but it does deal with some heavy stuff. There's kidnapping, TONS of violence, torture, human(ish) trafficking, murder. It's a very dark little book, but it's also AMAZING. But yeah, I'd say due to it's graphic nature, older teens.(less)
