The characters are all different (just like how in dghda and tea-time they're different) but Dirk is still there.
It's meant to be seen as a sort of sequel, as Dirk mentions 'something with a sofa' as one of the mysteries he's helped solve.
In my opinion, they captured Dirk's personality incredibly well, even though they gave him a different appearance (in the books, he's kind of fat with a red hat; here he's a tall lanky guy).

Personally, I loved the series (which I started a few days after finishing tea-time) and I thought it was incredibly well-executed.

If you want a literal adaptation, you'd be better off trying the radio show.(less)
