All that stuff about how "I saved your life so now your life is mine" just raised my hackles. There were men like that in those days--still are; but that doesn't make it a good choice in a YA novel of that time, or this time, for that matter.(less)

Also Emily mentions that Laur…moreI’m guessing either late 1880s or early 1890s. They mention an elderly relative who is 90 and may “see out the century”. Also Emily mentions that Laura wears a small bustle and Elizabeth none. Bustles were out by 1890 and I expect Emily is looking out for current fashions. (less)
