am almost finished with this excellent book, but I have a question. I must have missed the part where the Count became a waiter. Maybe my bookmark fell out. All of a sudden he goes from having hidden gold coins to working as a waiter in the hotel. How did he fall into these reduced circumstances? This book pretty much sums all the Russian books I have read into one very touching story.

My book club is reading A gentleman in Moscow and I'm finding it horribly slow without much plot. Does it get better? I'm at the end of Book One.

It (almost) perfectly illustrates…moreI feel sorry for those who did not enjoy the book and consider it slow. I think they are missing the pleasure of it! It (almost) perfectly illustrates the idea that a journey is not about the destination so much as the pleasure of travel. Likewise, this book is about the pleasure of the story and how it is crafted and told. It matches the concept of a "gentleman" and that his purpose is not to "do" but to "be." (less)

Awwwtrouble I think he meets up with Anna, but then he follows the route he took to get INTO the country to get OUT of the country - with his love of symmetry, he…moreI think he meets up with Anna, but then he follows the route he took to get INTO the country to get OUT of the country - with his love of symmetry, he packs the same rusack to make the same journey, but in reverse. He (and Anna) will meet Sofia in Paris. (less)
