I feel like he is not the main character in these two, just more of a leading character. Book #3, The Cabinet of Curiosities, is where you really start learning more about him and his background. I feel this is where he becomes the main character of the series and it starts to become about him. I would highly suggest starting to read them in order from The Cabinet of Curiosities.(less)
