How is this book compared to "where'd you go bernadette"? I loved it, but then tried reading Maria Semple's first book ("this one is mine") and still haven't finished it.. So should I go for the new book or not?

The characters are more a collection of quirky personality traits, not a whole lot happens and the ending is contrived and artificial. This book has completely turned me off from reading Maria Semple again.(less)

I have not read any of Semple's other books. I read the description of this one and thought it seemed like a decent book to read between heavier novels. The reviews make it seem like if you read Semple's other books, you will dislike this one. But I haven't, so would it be suitable to read?

I finished this last night, and I honestly don't know what to think about it. Like...what am I supposed to learn? Also several I suppose "chapters" that were more like page breaks ended what I thought to be in a vague fashion. Like when Eleanor ends one spot with "Oh, wait..." wait what? What happened? Am I the only one who felt this way?

The whole story about Ivy felt out of place to me, too, like it was written as it's own story but then crammed in the middle of this story but just didn't really fit.(less)
