A really unlikable character uses the b-word once or twice in the second book. The strongest thematic element is that of a thriller, but the violence is mild and all at a level appropriate for teens, young adults, and maybe even some pre-teens.(less)

It really catches the emotions of the characters i…more Less paranormal, more sci-fi, but the "Uglies" series by Scott Westerfield absolutely thrilled me. It really catches the emotions of the characters in a coming-of-age kind of narrative, and there's a lot of experiments and other weird stuff going on. I'd definitely recommend it.
However, if you're looking for paranormal specifically, I'd recommend "Suddenly Supernatural" by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. It's for a slightly younger age group, but still a good read!
