I read this book when I was ten, then a couple of times as an adult and I read it to children too. I never get tired of it. Style is great, and it's less centered on good vs evil dynamics, more on personal growth. It's not about escaping in a fantasy world, it is about learning to live in the world, and to tell reality from imagination. One mile above all other children books. (less)

Or, rather, rephrase them so she could still hear about them but in a manner more suitable to her age. She said the best thing is that this book has no pictures so she can imagine instead.(less)

I'm told it's nothing like the book, from what I relayed to my wife while reading it, as she has only seen the movie. One of best books I've ever perused, quite amazing when you understand the symbolism and depth of life lessons to be learned from it. I don't think Ende was procrastinating, I think he was a bloody thematic genius. See, Bastian leaves MANY MANY stories "unfinished" in that world when he leaves, to the point where Atreyu basically has to promise to spend his life cleaning up these incomplete stories after him in order for him to leave. "That's another story" being used so often is a way of foreshadowing this plot thread. (less)
