I was a troubled teen when I read it and "Alice" helped me realize, that I should face my problems instead of hiding in substance abuse or commit suicide. Both options I considered and both options I'm proud to say, I've never tried.
Fiction or nonfiction, the issues are real and the story should be respected as such.
I'm sure I'm not the only reader who believes, that characters don't have to be real to make an impact.(less)

The particulars of her demise are unimportant. The key message here is: DO DRUGS AND YOU DIE!

Never mind which drugs and how they might induce death. The protagonist was a druggie so she had it coming. From the moment she took a puff of weed she started down a slippery slope that must inevitably lead to her death, by the logic of this story. (less)

I'm sixteen and found it very tame in terms of how appropriate it is, but there are obviously mentions of a lot of different drugs and rapes that occur, so I wouldn't have younger kids read this.
