By far - my preferred translator is George Madison Priest. I've had and read other copies with different translators and came out not even liking Part One! For me there is much loss in translation - or perhaps just much change. I am French and have not really liked one English translation of a French novel whereas the French version was easily more likeable. As for Goethe tis Priest for me. As for Russian into English tis Constance Garnett over L and A Maude.(less)

It's about love, but also about trying to do some good in the world. It's about people understanding each other and understanding themselves, and what happens when someone can't do either. I just finished it, and all I want to do is read it again. (less)
