Overall it's very different other than the tone and a few of the books events happen in the movie.

Forest in the novel has a much different body type than Tom Hanks. He has a lot more and very different adventures in the novel than the movie. His mom acts differently.

While the novel version of Forrest tells you more of what he is thinking, he still only understands things on a level of a man who is brilliant in some areas and limited in others.(less)
