Did the narrator mention whose funeral he went to? He talked about his children but there seemed to be no mention of his wife - or did I miss it? Where? - so was it his wife's funeral?

While I did see and really appreciate the objective quality of this book, it's just not my style at all... I keep seeing the author's name in every suggestion thread and bookstore though. Is this book representative of his work or is it "unique" for his style?

1.Scratch's line in Chapter 4 Since before the little people sacrificed each other on the rocks. What does the line mean? Who are the little people? Is something related to Cú Chulainn？ 2. Lettie's line in Chapter 4 Big Oliver. He turned up at the farm back in pagan times. Who is Big Oliver? When is pagan times? I have an earlier version of this book.
