In chapter 4 Maxim mentions that she has a lovely and unusual name, and she says her father was a lovely and unusual person. Which makes me think she was either named for her father, or by her father. Daphne du Maurier's father was named Gerald. 1. Daphne (if she named the character after herself)
2. Geraldine (if she named the character after her father)
3. Gwendolyn (an unusual name of the era that could easily be mispelled).
