I would really like to know from the readers of this book (Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier), what do you think of the narrator of the book? Where do you think she went wrong or should have acted otherwise?

Does anyone else have a negative impression of Maxim? I would like to discuss the idea that Maxim is as much of a psychopath as is Rebecca and that we only have his version of events and characters. Rebecca cannot defend herself

This is a just-for-fun question.:) I loved this book. I know that Du Maurier left the narrator's name in "Rebecca" anonymous intentionally for a number of reasons that add to its mystery. But people also picture things when they read even if the author leaves it out, so just really curious....what would you other readers picture her name being if you chose it yourself?

In chapter 4 Maxim mentions that she has a lovely and unusual name, and she says her father was a lovely and unusual person. Which makes me think she was either named for her father, or by her father. Daphne du Maurier's father was named Gerald. So here are my top three guesses, based on names that would have been around in 1938:

1. Daphne (if she named the character after herself)
2. Geraldine (if she named the character after her father)
3. Gwendolyn (an unusual name of the era that could easily be mispelled).

What happened to maxim and the narrator after the fire? Where did they love? Which all servants were there? Was even a little bit of manderley left after the fire? (Honestly, I can't get over the ending. Is it just me or does anybody else feel like the last 60 pages of the book are missing???)
