Is anyone else besides me bothered by the fact that the main character, Mickey Haller, who'd been so consciously sober in all of the previous books, is now clearly "off the wagon" in The Gods of Guilt? It seems inconsistent for this character.

That one ‘victory’ cost him the chance of being DA and his daughter’s (and ex-wife’s) respect apart from the loss of the innocent people’s lives.(less)

Does this book stand on its own, or am I better off starting at the beginning of the series?

When did the Gallagher event happen? I don't recall him being mentioned in a previous book. I feel like I've really missed something and don't know where to look.

The books seem to skip years and only tell tales of key court cases and leave Mickey Haller's personal life as a background story. I would have liked a book about his attempted DA run.(less)

I'm confused, was there a book covering Mickey's run for DA and whatever happened to get his wife and daughter mad at him? Seems like it is talked about in this book but don't remember it being covered in another book so was just wondering. I was expecting this one to pick up where #4 left off.

Were any others bothered by the references to the failed DA bid and the break with Hayley? On more than one occasion, I checked to ensure I hadn't missed a book in the series since "The Fifth Witness" because it felt like this subject matter was addressed as a reminder for readers who'd already read the storyline. (Or was this perhaps addressed in one of the Bosch books I haven't gotten to yet?)

Still, it's quixotic to deal with the failed DA run and the discord with Hayley as an aside or in various "tell the reader" moments, when it feels like exactly the kind of stuff that would act as a narrative thread in an entire book by itself.
