Does this book need to be read among the Rizzoli and Isles book series? If so, do I need to read it after The Mephisto Club?

Can anyone recommend another good historical thriller like Tess Gerritsen's "The Bone Garden"? While it was a bit gruesome (would be difficult not to be, given the subject matter) I was very pleasantly surprised by the depth of the book in the sense of using historical problems and customs to great advantage in the story.
