I just finished re-reading this one and it's weird to see what Jael was like before the prison ship. He finally grew up?

Yup, he gets out of the mines. But they may have been the metaphorical frying pan. Highly recommend the Dred Chronicles which starts with Perdition.

But read the synopsis carefully, it's *different*.(less)
