Does anyone know whether there's any symbolism in this book? I know for example that "a kiss" (title) is a symbol for love in general, but is there anything else?

Bud is just an every day, average name, which is emblematic of who Bud is but does not want to be. The last name "Kingship" speaks for itself.

The Demuth painting alluded to in the novel, Egypt 1927, is also pretty symbolic of Bud. Look at the painting. It's two large silos and a grain tower dwarfing other buildings in a rural setting. Equating this with the pyramids in Egypt is both ironic and slight to the American notion of monuments and what American culture worships/values, but that's another topic. Bud is like the Demuth, a cheap knock off of something much greater.
