So, the description says its a stand alone, but is it? I mean, I've watched the movie, but haven't read the first book. Can I still read this or should I really go back to the ring first?

Unanswered Questions (1)

In this book, Ando recalls a scene from a novel set in Europe (supposedly a classic--in Japan, anyway) in which a lone woman gives birth to her child on the outskirts of a village in the mountains. To my immense frustration, neither Ando nor his creator (Suzuki) ever bother to name said novel. Does anyone know the title of the (presumably Western) book being referenced?
