I am reading the description of Private #4 and it mentions the main character as Dan Carter. Dan Carter died in Private #3....I'm confused already. I guess I will continue to read and see if Patterson ties things together.???

I was lost with the explanation of the surgeon and the people that were killed with part of their ring fingers missing. Why?
