Rereading Is Here! Let's Say It Again. Rereading Is Here!

How much do we love rereading? Let us count the ways…for those days when you just want to spend time with your favorite characters; or when you want to revisit a beloved classic; or maybe you want to brush up on a series before the next installment comes out (we're still waiting, George R.R. Martin and Diana Gabaldon), the list goes on! Rereading is such a core part of many of our readers' lives that having a better way to keep track of the times you've read a book has been your number one feature request. Starting today, that wish has been granted—no more missing out on rereads being counted for your Reading Challenge!
How Do I Start Using the Rereading Feature?
Next time you decide to reread a book that you've already marked as Read on Goodreads, simply mark it as Currently Reading. When you are done, just mark it as Read. You can do this from the Goodreads iOS and Android apps and on Goodreads.com, as well as in the About the Book feature on Kindle (if you have connected your Goodreads and Amazon accounts - click here to connect your accounts). We take care of marking it as a reread for you. Bonus, it will also automatically be included in your Reading Challenge.
Rereading Rolling Out In Stages
While it sounds like a simple thing to add, rereading turned out to be a complex engineering challenge that involved our entire database. To give you a sense of that scope, our 60 million members have added more than 1.7 billion books to their shelves! That's why we're rolling out rereading in stages. So, if you're not seeing it yet, you will soon!
How Do I Know If I Have the New Rereading Feature?
Go to Goodreads.com on desktop, choose a book you have already read, and click Edit on the My Activity area of the Book Page. At the bottom of the review section, you'll see the following:

How Do I Add All The Times I've Reread My Favorite Books?
On Goodreads.com on desktop, use the brand-new "Add read date" button in My Activity on the Book Page to enter when you read the book; then hit save! (You don't have to have a start date, but you must have a finish year for the book to count toward your Reading Challenge.)
What Happens If I've Been Keeping Track of My Rereads With The "Number of Times Read" Option?
If you previously used the "Number of times read" field, don't worry, we've already done the work for you and all your rereads are still there. If you added a number, it automatically shows in the new feature. If you used text, we've included it in the private notes section of your review. Simply click on edit Review, to change any dates or add more information.
I've Been Using Different Editions to Track Rereads, What Happens Now?
Our new rereading feature takes that into account! Rereads are comprehensive of all editions. When you view your review, it will indicate that you have also read another edition and include that in the total count.

Wondering which are the books Goodreads members most love to reread? Here are some of the most revisited books:

I like the reread option, but the implementation here was not optimal.

Stephanie wrote: "Omg I feel so bad now, it wasn't what I thought it was at all! It said I read another book twice that I also read in January that I only read once. "
Thanks for the update! Still, this inability to remove the duplicate read entry shouldn't be happening so please don't feel bad. I can see your support email and we'll be in touch with any updates.
Eirion wrote: "About the book I've reread more... Pride and Prejudice, of course (7 times for now)!"
I applaud your good taste – this is also my most reread book! :)
Dianah wrote: "Question: Is there a way to search all of my books for ones that I've read more than once?"
1. Visit your My Books page.
2. Click on 'Settings' at the top and add the "read count" column.
3. Click on the column heading to sort your books accordingly.
Please keep in mind that books will only reflect a number here if you've shelved multiple editions of the same book, or have previously recorded these as a reread.
Francesca wrote: "I think there's an error. When I mark a book as "Want to read", than I change the status to "Currently reading" it said I'm reading it for the second time..."
Can you let us know which book you're seeing this for?

Thanks for reporting! The team are aware of this bug and are working on a fix.
Ben wrote: "What about if we re-read a book using a different version? For example, I read All the Light We Cannot See in paperback and then re-read it using the Audible edition."
I love that book! Shelving different editions will still work as before, with each edition having its own reading session, but still counting towards the total number of rereads.
Let us know if you have any specific questions about this.
Maurizio Dimatteo wrote: "Just a quick heads up. If you download a book sample (e.g. from Amazon) and then decide to buy the whole thing, it will count as if you read it twice. That should be fixed."
Are you downloading and buying via your Kindle? If so, are you following any actions on the Goodreads tab of your Kindle when experiencing this behavior?

I've informed the team of your request!
Jack wrote: "I agree with Muse-ic, a book I read only once was marked twice on my 2017 Reading Challenge, is there any way I can change that?"
1. Click on My Books in the header to navigate to your shelves.
2. Use the search bar at the top of your shelves to find the book in question.
3. Click on the “edit” link in the last column on the right for that book (see attached screenshot).
4. Scroll down to the “Dates read” subheading in the pop-up that appears, and edit the relevant date. Alternatively, click on the “X” next to the set of dates if you’d like to remove them, and then click on “Save” at the bottom of the page.
Megan wrote: "I hate the feature. Since it's been added, some of the books I mark as currently reading for the first time somehow get switched to read, and that I'm reading them for the second time."
Would you mind emailing some examples of books that have changed shelves to us at support (at) goodreads (dot) com so we can look into this?

Please can you let us know if you see any further cases of books you've marked as "currently reading" being switched to "read" via an email to support (at) goodreads (dot) com?
We're aware of the issue that some users are experiencing with their Reading Challenges and are looking into this.

Nope! Can you link us to the book?
Hertz wrote: "No doubt this is a great feature, but I have some discrepancies with my Reading challenge. While it says I have read 11 books, in the challenge page, there are just 10 books."
Yes – we're working to fix this!

It is, indeed!

Honestly, it's been quite a few books. And I don't have them listed as that anymore because when I deleted them from my book reviews completely and then re-added them, it's worked out fine.

Sorry for the trouble with this – it is a known bug that we're working to fix.
Beate wrote: "I love the rereading feature. It's made using Goodreads fun again. The one thing I'm still missing though, is the daily quote in my right hand column."
We're so happy you're enjoying the feature! I'm letting the team know your feedback about the Quote of the Day. Just in case you weren't aware, this is still viewable on the right-hand side of the Quotes page.

I made the same mistake just now. I only read the book once but it said I'd read it three times. You may be able to edit it from your review page.

a time or two or three until it no longer showed a second read.

Yeah ! Thanks Suvi ! It worked for me too ! :-)

Thanks! That worked for me too!

The reread feature should be totally separate from everything else, and not connected to your currently reading and read dates. It's messing everything up! I also don't like the changes that have happened to the reviews. Used to, when you went to a book's page that you've read, you could see the date at the top right hand corner of the review. Now there's no date at all there, and it just says Edit. Bring back the old ones, where we could add how many times we've read a book, if we purchased it, what condition it was in, etc. This new rereading feature has taken over the whole review, when many people probably won't be rereading that many books anyway, so it might not even be an issue for them.

I miss the Goodreads Quote of the Day too! I logged on every day to see what it was. I had them sent to my e-mail so I could read them, but it makes no sense that they aren't shown on the side of the page anymore. Where exactly are they being showcased?! surely it's not just to people's emails!

They are on the quotes page which can be found on the Community drop down menu.

I've been unable to replicate this, would you mind sending some screenshots, along with a detailed description of the issue to us at support (at) goodreads (dot) com? We'd be happy to look into this.
"Also, it's showing the wrong dates I started and ended books. It's got the wrong dates on there and it's messing me up. It had that I had started a book a day later than I really did and finished it a day later."
I'm wondering if this is due to Goodreads running on PST time. You can change this retroactively on the review page.

Thanks for all your feedback! We're aware of all the points you've mentioned and are working to iron out any bugs and also to evaluate any suggestions provided by our users for potential inclusion, such as the re-adding of the review date.

Thanks for letting me know!

Yes, I've already sent one screenshot. I've never had a problem with the time though, so this is something new. And I've seen where to change it in those new boxes with the month, date and year, but it's so messed up that even though I manually enter the date started and finished the review still shows the wrong dates.

I'm so confused.

Thanks for your posts!

If two sets of date boxes are showing you can remove one by clicking on the X beside it. That seems to solve the problem for me.

If two sets ..."
Thanks for your response! I didn't even see that X beside it. I figured out what happened. Apparently, the book was added twice on different dates, making it a duplicate. When I deleted one of the entries, the problem was solved. :)

Thanks Shaun! Helpful to have the address where I can send my issues. I was able to solve the problem myself; it was a case of a book being added twice at different times (making a duplicate). When I deleted one of the entries, the problem was solved.

I was looking in the setting to see if there was a way to turn off the app to mark it as read. Could not find anything in the settings. Is there a place to turn it off???

Are you using a Kindle device or the Kindle app on another device? Also, are you rating the book from Kindle once you've finished reading? This rating of the book will create a reading session; however, finishing reading a book should not automatically mark the book as read on Goodreads.
John wrote: "One thing I noticed. With most of the items I read they been on my shelves and two sets of date boxes come up as if I am re-reading it."
Thanks for the added info, we'll make sure the team's aware of this as they continue to work on the issue.

I am using the Kindle app, and no I do not rate the book from the kindle when I complete it, it is like if I go to the last page it automatically set it to read. Is there a way to turn that off!!

HOWEVER, I have noticed that somehow, someway, it is messing up. When I mark a book as finished reading and add a review, somehow it is creating a "two times read" default. Looks like other people in my friends feed are having this problem too (although I'm not sure they've noticed it).
Here's what happened to me with "The Mothers" (just read first time):
I use a computer, google chrome, to log on Goodreads (if that is important). I add from the homepage my new read. When I logged back on a few weeks later, I edited, again from the homepage, that I am finished! I added a review, saved it, made some edits, saved it. When I noticed the "2 times read" on my profile on the book, I went back to edit it. There were two correct start dates, but one end date was today and one was open-ended. I hope this helps you correct the issue.
