Rereading Is Here! Let's Say It Again. Rereading Is Here!

Posted by Cybil on February 7, 2017

How much do we love rereading? Let us count the ways…for those days when you just want to spend time with your favorite characters; or when you want to revisit a beloved classic; or maybe you want to brush up on a series before the next installment comes out (we're still waiting, George R.R. Martin and Diana Gabaldon), the list goes on! Rereading is such a core part of many of our readers' lives that having a better way to keep track of the times you've read a book has been your number one feature request. Starting today, that wish has been granted—no more missing out on rereads being counted for your Reading Challenge!

How Do I Start Using the Rereading Feature?
Next time you decide to reread a book that you've already marked as Read on Goodreads, simply mark it as Currently Reading. When you are done, just mark it as Read. You can do this from the Goodreads iOS and Android apps and on Goodreads.com, as well as in the About the Book feature on Kindle (if you have connected your Goodreads and Amazon accounts - click here to connect your accounts). We take care of marking it as a reread for you. Bonus, it will also automatically be included in your Reading Challenge.

Rereading Rolling Out In Stages
While it sounds like a simple thing to add, rereading turned out to be a complex engineering challenge that involved our entire database. To give you a sense of that scope, our 60 million members have added more than 1.7 billion books to their shelves! That's why we're rolling out rereading in stages. So, if you're not seeing it yet, you will soon!

How Do I Know If I Have the New Rereading Feature?
Go to Goodreads.com on desktop, choose a book you have already read, and click Edit on the My Activity area of the Book Page. At the bottom of the review section, you'll see the following:

Rereading

How Do I Add All The Times I've Reread My Favorite Books?
On Goodreads.com on desktop, use the brand-new "Add read date" button in My Activity on the Book Page to enter when you read the book; then hit save! (You don't have to have a start date, but you must have a finish year for the book to count toward your Reading Challenge.)

What Happens If I've Been Keeping Track of My Rereads With The "Number of Times Read" Option?
If you previously used the "Number of times read" field, don't worry, we've already done the work for you and all your rereads are still there. If you added a number, it automatically shows in the new feature. If you used text, we've included it in the private notes section of your review. Simply click on edit Review, to change any dates or add more information.

I've Been Using Different Editions to Track Rereads, What Happens Now?
Our new rereading feature takes that into account! Rereads are comprehensive of all editions. When you view your review, it will indicate that you have also read another edition and include that in the total count.

message 1016: by Nullifidian (last edited Feb 11, 2017 09:37PM) (new)

Nullifidian This is good news, although I've never been stymied by rereads before, since I hardly ever reread any books within a year of each other. My one exception was last year, when I read The Martian as an audiobook and then read the paperback in the same month because I found it at a library book sale, but the two different formats allowed both to count to the reading challenge.

Given that I only signed up with Goodreads last November, I can't document my most reread books yet, but my top ten are The Decameron , Right Ho, Jeeves , The Name of the Rose , Metamorphoses , Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (these first five have already been reread since I've signed up here at GR), The Complete Essays of Montaigne , The Twelve Caesars , Persuasion , Erasure and The Good Soldier Švejk .

I have to say it surprised me to see that children's/young adult books are by far the most reread books on Goodreads. One, two, or even three wouldn't have necessarily surprised me, but seeing eight to nine is a bit of a shock. (I don't personally count The Lord of the Rings as a children's book even though others do, given that it draws so much on medieval epic poetry and sagas, but The Hobbit was intended by Tolkien to be for children.) It really shows that there has been a major change in how readers read and what they're reading.

message 1031: by Ben (new)

Ben What about if we re-read a book using a different version? For example, I read All the Light We Cannot See in paperback and then re-read it using the Audible edition. Can I make that clear at all?

message 1032: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Thank you!

message 1033: by Sara ♥ (last edited Feb 11, 2017 02:36PM) (new)

Sara ♥ Oh my gosh! I've been waiting for 10 years for this feature!! And now it's been here for FOUR DAYS, and I didn't even know it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I probably would have cried, but my 4-year-old interrupted my "moment" with one of the only things that could have distracted me... "Mommy! I need to throw up!" (No worries... it was a false alarm!)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! Now I just have to figure out how to navigate between multiple editions and then manually enter all my read dates. I'm SO GLAD I kept track of them!

My most reread book (without checking) is probably the audio version of Treachery in Death by J.D. Robb.

message 1034: by Maurizio (new)

Maurizio Just a quick heads up. If you download a book sample (e.g. from Amazon) and then decide to buy the whole thing, it will count as if you read it twice. That should be fixed.

This was always a possibility even before this adjustment. When I read The Martian last December, I first read it as an Audible audiobook, and then by chance got the paperback from a library book sale and read it. All I had to do was add the specific paperback edition after adding the Audible edition. Go to the link where it gives you all the editions of your book, find the specific one that fits the edition you're rereading, mark it as "Currently Reading", and then both will eventually show up in your list of read books (as proof, you can see The Martian appear twice in the list of books I read last year—the squarish image is the audiobook and the rectangular one the paperback).

message 1038: by dan (new)

message 1039: by Jeaneth (new)

Jeaneth Thank you, you made my day!!!!!

message 1040: by Megan (new)

Megan This is so exciting! My only issue right now is I added a book to my shelf, then switched editions, and now it thinks I'm reading this book for the second time (nope, just the first) and I can't make it delete that other edition. But I'm thrilled to have this option and thank you for rolling it out!

message 1041: by James (new)

James Joyce Cool. Started using it, immediately.

message 1042: by Veronica (new)

Veronica At last! I am currently 5 books ahead of my 2017 reading target just so I can go back and reread the 'Protector Series' again!

Ben Nullifidian wrote: "Ben wrote: "What about if we re-read a book using a different version? For example, I read All the Light We Cannot See in paperback and then re-read it using the Audible edition. Ca..."

Ok, thanks I'll give that a try. I didn't think it was possible as all editions seem to be marked as "read" if I click on them and am only given the option to "switch to this edition" if go to the editions page. I'll try and figure it out as you said, but I've tried many times before...

message 1044: by Jihad (new)

Jihad AWESOME SAUCE!!!! Thank you so much Goodreads!!!

Ben Nullifidian wrote: "Ben wrote: "What about if we re-read a book using a different version? For example, I read All the Light We Cannot See in paperback and then re-read it using the Audible edition. Ca..."

Hi again,

Did what you said and I think it worked! Thanks a lot! I'll make sure if I re-read a book through a different edition I start by navigating through the specific edition I'm reading (as if it was a new book), rather than trying to do it after the fact (like a re-read). Seems to do the trick. All the best!

message 1046: by Natacha (new)

Natacha Lalande thanks, i've read the Harry potter series so many times that i've lost count. Most of my own books i have i reread them if i like them.

Maya Muse-ic wrote: "Thank You!!! The only problem is that sometimes I accidentally click "read" and then when I fix that and actually read it later, is marks it as reread, even though I didn't. I noticed this because ..."

I had something like this happen. Though, I'm pretty sure I only clicked once. Anyway, I was able to remove one of the readings by clicking the x on the right of the read date (at the bottom of the review.
