message 57: by Soumya (new)

Soumya And the Kanin chronicles. Both series are awesome, yet i hardly believe they have the attention they deserve,

message 58: by Katerina (new)

Katerina guys it doesn't matter that "all your friends have read vicious" it doesn't have many reviews (not as many as it deserves) so they included it in this list

message 59: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Underrated does not mean neglected. It means not receiving the respect that is deserved. The question respondents thought they were answering is probably more like "What's a book you really liked that your friends don't seem to have read?" Or maybe "What's a book you want to convince your friends they should like better than they seem to?" :-)

message 60: by Soumya (new)

Soumya That's right. And there also some books who do not deserve the attention they get, so it is kinda fair.

message 61: by Stian (new)

Stian Larsen Knjigoholičarka wrote: ""The Master and Margarita" underrated? Seriously?"

More like overrated!

message 62: by Karl (new)

Karl Orbell Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve - wonderful series, does not yet have the traction it should with the general public. Eventually they'll get around to making a film of it, WETA have the rights, then probably it'll take off more.

Carole For a book to be 'underrated' would imply that very few people have noticed it and read it... If anything, this discussion shows the flaw in asking people to recommend their most 'underrated' book and then choosing the (likely) most frequently mentioned ones to showcase - at best, it shows which 'underrated' books are still well-known!
I'd suggest listing books that have very few reviews altogether - for example, like Masks or The Elfin Knight, which both have few reviews, all of which are positive... Those books are underrated!

message 67: by Jason (new)

Jason McInnis I think underrated means not rated as high as they should be. So if you think Master and Margarita is the best Russian novel it is underrated. It rarely gets the love of a novel by Dostoyevsky, Chekov, Tolstoy for example. I think most commenters are misunderstanding the word underated in this context.

message 68: by Agnes (new)

Agnes Oblivion by sasha dawn is super under rated

message 69: by Linda (new)

Linda The Red Magician by Lisa Goldstein --which was a National Book Award winner for Original Paperback (1983) and luckily has been reissued.

message 70: by Library Nymph (new)

Library Nymph I think I'd have to add The Naming by Alison Croggon. I came crossed it accidentally, and a friend of mine who seems to know about every book know to man thought it was a great fantasy. I've just started reading it, and I've already fallen in love with it! Why didn't I know about it before?! I suggest it here to all! : )

message 71: by Library Nymph (new)

Library Nymph Just added Moloka'l, The Master and Margarita, and The Transit of Venus to my To-Read list.

Tristan Jason wrote: "I think underrated means not rated as high as they should be. So if you think Master and Margarita is the best Russian novel it is underrated. It rarely gets the love of a novel by Dostoyevsky, Che..."

While I know what you're getting at, The Master and Margarita is very much still in the canon. Ask me for Russian literature and I would list this book along with The Brothers Karamosov, Crime and Punishment, War and Peace, Notes from the Underground, The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, and Anna Karenina as the ones that get cultural purchase. Maybe it doesn't fall as high on the list as it should, but I don't know if one of the first eight books someone who has read practically no Russian literature would list can qualify as "underrated".

Kerry | KerryGetsLiterary Ashley *Hufflepuff Kitten* wrote: "Moloka'i was a phenomenal book!"

I completely agree! It's the only one on this list that I've read before and I loved it!

Kerry | KerryGetsLiterary Maureen wrote: "I really wish GR would have a specific designation for YA novels so when a YA title is on one of these lists, I don't waste my time looking it up."

Yes! I've been thinking the same thing! Sometimes I like YA books, but I'd like to know beforehand if it is or not.
