New Navigation Bar on Goodreads
UPDATE: the new navigation bar is now live for everyone on Goodreads! Thanks so much to those of you who filled out the survey—to those of you who haven't had a chance to do so yet, please be sure to fill out the survey to give us your feedback on the new experience!
Starting today, we're introducing a new navigation bar on the desktop site. With a more streamlined look, the new navigation makes it easier for you to get to all the features of Goodreads you love, search for books, and stay up to date with your messages and notifications.
This new experience will be rolled out over the next few weeks, so don't worry if you don't see it yet—it's coming!

The new navigation is designed to be clean and easy to read. It features a larger search box and adapts to the width of your screen, whether you're viewing Goodreads on a tablet or a desktop computer. If you're browsing Goodreads on a desktop computer, you'll also notice that it remains visible when you scroll down the page, keeping important links accessible at all times.
Under Browse, you'll find links to our popular Giveaways section (who can resist free books!), as well as New Releases, and author interviews and book recommendations in News & Interviews. The navigation also comes with a new spotlight on books from your favorite genres that are trending among the Goodreads community, helping you discover more great books to add to your to-read list.
Community is our new gateway to all things social on Goodreads. Find your Groups and discover new ones, see which authors are answering questions in Ask the Author, and test your knowledge with Trivia and Quizzes.
Once you have a chance to use the new navigation, let us know what you think of it via our survey.

It's been like that for a few updates on the goodreads iOS app. It's not happening as far as I can see on the web site, or at least with the browsers I have access to.

You can customize your feed by clicking on the "gear" icon at the top of the feed and unclicking the parts you don't want to see.
I was able to get rid of the "recommended books" part of the feed (which I thought was particularly spammy.)

Agree.

Yes! I bumped into this yesterday and found it extremely annoying as well. It's not going to make any difference whether people actually read it or not. Especially after the 10th giveaway they enter.

Completely agree as well. It's a rot for website designs that has been spreading for the last several years in spite of the fact that people with computers (as opposed to mobile devices)--many/most of whom still have unswipeable screens--are still a majority, according to my IT/level 3 spouse. What is so hard about making a classic version for those who dislike some of these changes?

The increased vertical height and that it's always there was initially irritating, but I quickly got used to it.
On my android tablet (running Firefox) the menus work better under this system. They're not so easy to accidentally make go away which was a serious issue when you have lots of notifications. On my PC there's that bug I mentioned earlier which Meghan acknowledged. Once that gets fixed it should get better.
I love the Browse => Favorite Genres feature. I don't think I ever used the Browse menu on the old menubar; this one I see myself using regularly.
The reorganization makes sense as well with the goodreads site menus on one side and the user menus on the other side. However, the switch between the "G" icon and the goodreads logo is happening too early. There's quite a lot of blank space between the search box and the notifications icon at the transition point between the two. (You can see this by resizing your browser window horizontally). That's important because on small touch screens with good resolution you can do without pressing on the the small icons on the right side, but you often need to use the home button which is now the logo. Keeping it large for longer is a good thing when dealing with "fat fingers".

However, you're ruining that experience for me becuase everytime time I comment now, as soon as I post it..."
That happens on the phone app, but not when you access GR website via a browser. It's frustrating to me too.

For those of you who are frustrated with the previous changes with very white background and teeny-tiny font, you can change back to almost how it used to be in the Chrome browser. Go to https://userstyles.org/styles/browse?... and install. There are 3 choices, I installed the "Goodreads Fix" which provides a large, serif font for most things with a creamy background.

Okay; I can survive with the first major changes that happened after years of being accustom to the original background, fonts and stuff. But this? This is awful. I wish they would quit making random, major changes. I've been on this site since 2011, I don't want to quit using it, but the new designs are a head-ache. Literally.
I liked the way it looked before. I knew where everything was before. Everything worked before. Yes, I realize I'm complaining, but GR is loosing people over the fact that they don't want to leave the old stuff - That worked perfectly well with users - alone. Why mess with something that already worked? What is the point?
How about a voting system before making changes; That includes the actual users.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I still can't get over the last "improvements". Seriously ruining what use to be my favorite site.

I think it looks great! More sophisticated and clean. I really like the overall look of the page.

You are not. I would like half-star ratings and would absolutely love to be able to count re-reads. As for the cosmetic changes - if a plastic surgeon ever did a botch up on this magnitude (especially the before Christmas change), the client would be suing for malpractice and compensation etc.

Everything is organized and neater. Not an eyesore or too many links.

Have really appreciated the opportunity to win some advance copies as well which is a joy.

I hope with this new bar i see ALL my favorite genres and show my lists and other lists better.
Now reccomendations shows just 5 genres, and most books of those 5 are the same! So i see 5 rows with the same books. And Idislike that they only show new books.
So I hope it would give recommendations for all my genres, more lists, better recommendations!
And I like to combine genres when searching:
Like romance / vampire etc.
And I like to be able to exclude:
So no more Young Adult , Novella's or Manga in my list.
I am fond of manga, but there are better sites for that.
With bythe way all the funtions I am asking. So it is possible.
Here i only want to see books.
And for me Novalla's and short story's are not books.
200 pages or less is for me a short book, with the exception when it is an arc with the same leading characters.
They should be in a whole other categorie.
I hate to see those in the lists.
And I like to have a more simple way to add a genre to a book.
Firefox user.

Just following up on this issue. This is utilizing the website itself on a desktop. The issue began yesterday midmorning as you implemented the changes. I have since rebooted my machine and encounter the same problem, that is, as soon as I finish posting a comment I'm automatically popped back up to the top of the daily feed and have to scroll back down to where I originally was.
I don't bother to use the phone app anymore for the same reason.

There's that too! I'd love half-star ratings, it'd just be perfect for those books that you didn't like as much as four stars so you'll put three-and-a-half stars, for example. And plus I reread a lot, and I didn't make my challenge last year even though I exceeded it, they didn't count the rereads. It sucks.
