New Navigation Bar on Goodreads

Posted by Suzanne on March 8, 2016
UPDATE: the new navigation bar is now live for everyone on Goodreads! Thanks so much to those of you who filled out the survey—to those of you who haven't had a chance to do so yet, please be sure to fill out the survey to give us your feedback on the new experience!

Starting today, we're introducing a new navigation bar on the desktop site. With a more streamlined look, the new navigation makes it easier for you to get to all the features of Goodreads you love, search for books, and stay up to date with your messages and notifications.

This new experience will be rolled out over the next few weeks, so don't worry if you don't see it yet—it's coming!

The new navigation is designed to be clean and easy to read. It features a larger search box and adapts to the width of your screen, whether you're viewing Goodreads on a tablet or a desktop computer. If you're browsing Goodreads on a desktop computer, you'll also notice that it remains visible when you scroll down the page, keeping important links accessible at all times.

Under Browse, you'll find links to our popular Giveaways section (who can resist free books!), as well as New Releases, and author interviews and book recommendations in News & Interviews. The navigation also comes with a new spotlight on books from your favorite genres that are trending among the Goodreads community, helping you discover more great books to add to your to-read list.

Community is our new gateway to all things social on Goodreads. Find your Groups and discover new ones, see which authors are answering questions in Ask the Author, and test your knowledge with Trivia and Quizzes.

Once you have a chance to use the new navigation, let us know what you think of it via our survey.

Rick I will have to watch for thst behavior Mike, it would definitely be a large negative for me. I don't know of another feed-based app which does that, it defeats the pupose of having a feed to scroll through.

Amy (Other Amy) Feedback provided through both surveys and the feedback group. If you insist on pushing auto-open drop downs on us, at least give us a user preference setting to turn them back to click open. (You received a lot of feedback on this already and did it anyway.)

It's been like that for a few updates on the goodreads iOS app. It's not happening as far as I can see on the web site, or at least with the browsers I have access to.

message 104: by Theresa (new)

Theresa Would you please get rid of the darn pop up EVERY SINGLE TIME one enters a give away. It is most annoying! Having the info on the side was fine. Once I have read that info I DO NOT need to see it again. Thanks!

Sean O Troy wrote: "I hope the new layout eliminates "sponsored books" from my updates!"

You can customize your feed by clicking on the "gear" icon at the top of the feed and unclicking the parts you don't want to see.

I was able to get rid of the "recommended books" part of the feed (which I thought was particularly spammy.)

message 106: by Sue (new)

Sue Myers I was a very satisfied Shelfari reader. When I had to switch to Goodreads, more than 1/3 of my books did not transfer. I guess I need to put them in myself, by hand. That is very time consuming and probably will not do that. Also, I loved the statistics part of Shelfari where it graphed how many pages were read and how many books and of what type. I know that change is difficult, but I am not finding features on Goodreads that I love and I miss the features of Shelfari.

PinkPanthress I am not sure if I like this from the preview... we will see if it's okay...

Yes! I bumped into this yesterday and found it extremely annoying as well. It's not going to make any difference whether people actually read it or not. Especially after the 10th giveaway they enter.

Dawn Anny wrote: "...And just a personal point of view, I really don't like that the desktop version is starting to look more and more like a phone application."

Completely agree as well. It's a rot for website designs that has been spreading for the last several years in spite of the fact that people with computers (as opposed to mobile devices)--many/most of whom still have unswipeable screens--are still a majority, according to my IT/level 3 spouse. What is so hard about making a classic version for those who dislike some of these changes?

message 111: by Eden (new)

Eden What I'm about to post has nothing to do with the topic, but I was wondering if we would ever be able to give half-star ratings? that would make a book's rating even more accurate!

message 112: by Luke (new)

Luke Finally...

Danielle (Danniegurl) Not sure I'm a fan.

message 114: by Lindsay (last edited Mar 09, 2016 07:15PM) (new)

Lindsay I've had it for just over a day now.

The increased vertical height and that it's always there was initially irritating, but I quickly got used to it.

On my android tablet (running Firefox) the menus work better under this system. They're not so easy to accidentally make go away which was a serious issue when you have lots of notifications. On my PC there's that bug I mentioned earlier which Meghan acknowledged. Once that gets fixed it should get better.

I love the Browse => Favorite Genres feature. I don't think I ever used the Browse menu on the old menubar; this one I see myself using regularly.

The reorganization makes sense as well with the goodreads site menus on one side and the user menus on the other side. However, the switch between the "G" icon and the goodreads logo is happening too early. There's quite a lot of blank space between the search box and the notifications icon at the transition point between the two. (You can see this by resizing your browser window horizontally). That's important because on small touch screens with good resolution you can do without pressing on the the small icons on the right side, but you often need to use the home button which is now the logo. Keeping it large for longer is a good thing when dealing with "fat fingers".

message 116: by Jenni Elyse (new)

Jenni Elyse Why are people so freaking negative?! I just don't understand it. I like the new look and I'm excited for this change too. I just want to make sure that you have a positive comment on here. So, here's to you, Goodreads team! Keep up the great work!

message 117: by Eddie (new)

Eddie Before you fools release something new..... make sure you take your time and do it right the first time, and make sure its something we the users WANT. Do I need to remind you of how you completely lost the ball on the 'right before Christmas' update'??

Suzy Mike wrote: "So..I really enjoy going through my daily feeds and commenting on my friend's reviews.....

That happens on the phone app, but not when you access GR website via a browser. It's frustrating to me too.

message 119: by Suzy (last edited Mar 09, 2016 04:17PM) (new)

Suzy Dear Goodreads, I hope you are both open to users feedback and have thick skin! I like the new navigation bar when using GR website via Chrome web browser. I like that it is always visible no matter how far down in my home feed I have wandered. That was a frustration with the previous. I like the hover feature.

For those of you who are frustrated with the previous changes with very white background and teeny-tiny font, you can change back to almost how it used to be in the Chrome browser. Go to https://userstyles.org/styles/browse?... and install. There are 3 choices, I installed the "Goodreads Fix" which provides a large, serif font for most things with a creamy background.

message 120: by Farren (new)

Farren I love the new large and ever-present notification bar! Navigation is much more simple this way. But I do agree that it would be great if notifications refreshed on their own.

message 121: by Tamela (last edited Mar 09, 2016 05:07PM) (new)

Tamela I'd like to know how I get back to my Recent Updates page once I've followed a link out to a blog or recommendation? I'm also among those who find the new format hard to read. Everything is too light and not enough contrast. I can hardly read the smaller print on some of the headers... it fades right into the background color. I also am spending much less time. I come in now and mark my books, then I'm out instead of trying to read any of the recent posts or blogs. Means less business for your authors cuz I used to get most of my recommendations from the Recent Updates postings. Now I'm doing a reread of my already owned ebooks instead of buying new. Its just easier.

Blogger Girl ummmm...where are the changes?

๖ۣۜƧilverlight Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate.

Okay; I can survive with the first major changes that happened after years of being accustom to the original background, fonts and stuff. But this? This is awful. I wish they would quit making random, major changes. I've been on this site since 2011, I don't want to quit using it, but the new designs are a head-ache. Literally.

I liked the way it looked before. I knew where everything was before. Everything worked before. Yes, I realize I'm complaining, but GR is loosing people over the fact that they don't want to leave the old stuff - That worked perfectly well with users - alone. Why mess with something that already worked? What is the point?

How about a voting system before making changes; That includes the actual users.

Mindy Oh, I believe I had the beta for this a few days ago. I like it a lot! :)

message 127: by Charlie (new)

Charlie People need to stop complaining about Every Little Change!

I think it looks great! More sophisticated and clean. I really like the overall look of the page.

message 128: by Jess (new)

Jess Adlington I really like it :)

message 129: by Brian (new)

Brian Looks good! Much cleaner, I like it. Thanks, and illegitimi non carborundum.

message 130: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi When are we going to get a reread button? Or for books that I've read more than once in a year to count in my challenge? Quit moving stuff around and actually add things that readers (At least me) want. I can't be the only one who feels this way.

message 131: by Gazelle (new)

Gazelle Sorry guys, but it doesn't look that nice to be honest! I cannot understand why there is this will amount Goodreads web designers to make it look like FB! Since you provide a place for readers it is not bad to keep some of the characters you used to have!

message 132: by Elentarri (new)

Elentarri Kelsi_Betsy wrote: "I can't be the only one who feels this way."

You are not. I would like half-star ratings and would absolutely love to be able to count re-reads. As for the cosmetic changes - if a plastic surgeon ever did a botch up on this magnitude (especially the before Christmas change), the client would be suing for malpractice and compensation etc.

message 133: by Courtney (new)

Courtney I really like the new notification bar!!! It's so cool.

message 134: by Famine (last edited Mar 10, 2016 01:42AM) (new)

Famine Looking good! Pages are much easier to find now! Loving it.

Everything is organized and neater. Not an eyesore or too many links.

message 135: by Seemita (new)

Seemita Oh give it up, guys! Fixing of bugs needs more attention than layout rejigs. PERIOD.

message 136: by Holli (last edited Mar 10, 2016 03:17AM) (new)

Holli Oh, for the love of... Stop "improving" things! I like the original version of Goodreads in how it looked when I first joined here. All the so-called improvements are only making me seek out ways to undo them.

message 137: by [ J o ] (new)

[ J o ] Nothing you do will ever be as bad as letting people put gifs in reviews, so hey, what a lovely new shiny feature to take our minds off the glaringly obvious rubbishness everywhere else. Huzzah! I'm sure it'll be totally spiffing when it rolls around to me.

message 138: by Katie (new)

Katie Wow, I didn't realize how many things people were unhappy with on Goodreads. I've loved the site especially compared to some other "reading" sites.

Have really appreciated the opportunity to win some advance copies as well which is a joy.

message 139: by Eric (new)

Eric Mesa Looks nice. Any info on getting ebooks for the giveaways? I'm out of shelf space, but love some of the books I've gotten via giveaway.

message 140: by Erika (new)

Erika I love this new look! Good Job.

message 141: by ThePsychopath∞ (new)

ThePsychopath∞ Any way to roll back for individuals? Or adding that ability? Dislike this new formal a lot.

message 142: by Shubham (new)

Shubham Kumar I like the new look. It makes browsing easier.

message 143: by Camille (new)

Camille Yay! I had a hard time getting used to navigation when I first started using this site. I'm happy to see some changes in an attempt to improve user friendliness.

message 144: by Robin (new)

Robin I would suggest to anyone who is frustrated with GoodReads that you try LibraryThing. I have been a member of both for many years, and I spend more of my time on LT than on GR because I enjoy the features and the community more. There is a forum just for authors to discuss their books, and a member giveaway area, where unknown authors can stage a giveaway of their books in exchange for a review. It is a separate area from the giveaways by publishing houses and therefore will be seen by more people. It is just a much more user friendly site, and everyone can participate as much or as little as they like.

message 145: by Halit Emin (new)

Halit Emin Nice, I like it. :)

message 146: by Dreamcatcher (last edited Mar 10, 2016 07:25AM) (new)

Dreamcatcher Hey,

I hope with this new bar i see ALL my favorite genres and show my lists and other lists better.
Now reccomendations shows just 5 genres, and most books of those 5 are the same! So i see 5 rows with the same books. And Idislike that they only show new books.

So I hope it would give recommendations for all my genres, more lists, better recommendations!

And I like to combine genres when searching:
Like romance / vampire etc.

And I like to be able to exclude:
So no more Young Adult , Novella's or Manga in my list.
I am fond of manga, but there are better sites for that.
With bythe way all the funtions I am asking. So it is possible.
Here i only want to see books.

And for me Novalla's and short story's are not books.
200 pages or less is for me a short book, with the exception when it is an arc with the same leading characters.
They should be in a whole other categorie.
I hate to see those in the lists.

And I like to have a more simple way to add a genre to a book.

Firefox user.

Just following up on this issue. This is utilizing the website itself on a desktop. The issue began yesterday midmorning as you implemented the changes. I have since rebooted my machine and encounter the same problem, that is, as soon as I finish posting a comment I'm automatically popped back up to the top of the daily feed and have to scroll back down to where I originally was.

I don't bother to use the phone app anymore for the same reason.

There's that too! I'd love half-star ratings, it'd just be perfect for those books that you didn't like as much as four stars so you'll put three-and-a-half stars, for example. And plus I reread a lot, and I didn't make my challenge last year even though I exceeded it, they didn't count the rereads. It sucks.
