Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

That's just plain ignorant of a statement to make, really. No, people don't just dislike it because its new and breaks their habits. There are many, MANY reasonable people here describing eyestrain from the new font and how the background contrast is too high compared to the rest of the site now.
There are plenty of reasonable explanations and suggestions on how to improve it. Putting everybody who has an issue with the changes into some "haters gonna hate, they just don't like change" box is ridiculous.

Horrible font choices and typography.
The two are different. As you can tell by the comments. I like the changes in aesthetics. I hate the font choices and readability.

My English's too poor to explain me.
Problems with eyesight, not with new things.
Perhaps in order to solve one problem they caused another one, it often happens.

Please consider emphasizing readability instead of pretty!!"
This! It really takes a lot of effort to read stuff this way, we need a background that's not completely white and the font is hard to read, it looks like the text is missing parts. I prefered the old version, the colours were good, the font was readable and nothing hurt my eyes.

Didn't really help. I'm on Windows 7, IE 11. Same issues on my Windows 10.

I will send some screenshots to the GR team, and I encourage other users to see if the font looks different in different browsers. Hopefully there's a way to make the new changes work in all browsers.

No. It has been said millions of times that ..."
No it is really bothering my eyes not that it is new. It is giving me a headache trying to read it this way. If I can't find a way to get back the old way so I don't damage my eyes I won't be on here much any more and going to look for a new site for my books.

Specifically, where do we go to get this?

I just compared the three browsers as well.
Fonts are smaller and harder to read for these old eyes, on Firefox and Chrome. Seemed OK on IE, but, IE isn't my cuppa tea. :)
The font size for these comments is nice and comfy, tho! (Chrome)

On the other hand, I do think it looks blurry, as if the font is translating poorly to the screen. In addition, if there is such a thing as too high contrast, this might be it.
Cleaner? Maybe. Jury's out. But it does increase eyestrain.

Alvie wrote: "Why is everyone whinning so much? The font is fine."
Lauren and Alvie, a great number of of the people who 'just don't like it' are using Chrome, Firefox, desktop or laptop, and/or are visually impaired. That would indicate to me that this new change is 1) disparate across different internet browsers, 2) disparate across different mediums, and 3) inaccessible to some with disabilities or impairments. This might be a new concept to you, but perhaps not everyone experiences precisely the same thing as you do.

Thank you! I've never heard of this but downloaded it and the published comments are so much easier to read!

Thanks for this. So much better.

Yes, I can see that. I'm also using Firefox, and there is a big difference. The normal text is also much smaller on group threads, and I'm not sure why. Here, it's too big; there, it's too small. Fix please!
