Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

Keep it up Goodreads!!"That's just plain ignorant of a statement to make, really. No, people don't just dislike it because its new and breaks their habits. There are many, MANY reasonable people here describing eyestrain from the new font and how the background contrast is too high compared to the rest of the site now.
There are plenty of reasonable explanations and suggestions on how to improve it. Putting everybody who has an issue with the changes into some "haters gonna hate, they just don't like change" box is ridiculous.
Great layout; Web design changes.Horrible font choices and typography.
The two are different. As you can tell by the comments. I like the changes in aesthetics. I hate the font choices and readability.
Great job. Any way you can improve the page speed load time? Every page seems to take 1-2 seconds to load.
Still can't read it, still seems blurry, white background plus new font are still hurting my eyes. What was wrong with the old font that everyone could read?
Thanks Suvi to explain how I feel. My English's too poor to explain me.
Problems with eyesight, not with new things.
Perhaps in order to solve one problem they caused another one, it often happens.

This! It really takes a lot of effort to read stuff this way, we need a background that's not completely white and the font is hard to read, it looks like the text is missing parts. I prefered the old version, the colours were good, the font was readable and nothing hurt my eyes.
Personally, I like the font, but not the colors. The font finally mirrors the number of lines that you actually will be typing out. If you need any recommendations, though, to appease people, keep with Times New Roman. Everyone knows and loves that, but maybe keep it so the font mirrors the line count? The colors, though... The site was already dull at first, plain white with a dull golden brown topping... I liked the slight accents of bright colors. Now you've just filtered everything out and made everything even duller. In trying to improve the color gradient... Just don't, please?
I like the new design, but have to agree that the font is hard to read. It's almost like when you sharpen the image too much in Photoshop or something and the outlines begin to look jagged and hard on the eyes. Not sure how to explain, but it's actually painful. I think the problem is that it's too skinny.

We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates. Didn't really help. I'm on Windows 7, IE 11. Same issues on my Windows 10.
I would like to provide some feedback on the new font. It looks like it might be a web browser issue. I use Chrome exclusively. I can't use IE or Firefox at work because they do not work well on our computers, and I prefer to use Chrome anyway. So I checked this out in IE, Chrome, and Firefox. The font looks fine in IE. But in both Firefox and Chrome, it looks completely different and I find it very straining. I'm starting to get a headache, and I never had any problems with the old font.I will send some screenshots to the GR team, and I encourage other users to see if the font looks different in different browsers. Hopefully there's a way to make the new changes work in all browsers.
I applied the Stylish Chrome extension with the "goodreads fix" layout and it is now a better user experience. The body text is returned to Georgia, and the title font isn't as murky. It's annoying that a whole browser population has been essentially ignored in this site redesign, but I guess it's also heartening that the user has power to change the appearance through extensions. So happy holidays to everyone and I'm done with being so annoyed.
HATE the changes in font. I feel like I can't read anything!!!!!! I have never found it so hard to read text on a website before. The fact that I come to this site specifically to read is driving me crazy. CHANGE THE FONT BACK!

No it is really bothering my eyes not that it is new. It is giving me a headache trying to read it this way. If I can't find a way to get back the old way so I don't damage my eyes I won't be on here much any more and going to look for a new site for my books.
I noticed the color change right away and liked it. But that before and after picture really shows how much more legible it is!
Sonya wrote: "I applied the Stylish Chrome extension with the "goodreads fix" layout and it is now a better user experience. The body text is returned to Georgia, and the title font isn't as murky. It's annoying..."Specifically, where do we go to get this?
My eyes literally hurt. The new font is terrible. I also liked it that Goodreads wasn't completely white like it is now. Nope. Not a fan. Have to log out now cause my eyes really can't take this.

Fonts are smaller and harder to read for these old eyes, on Firefox and Chrome. Seemed OK on IE, but, IE isn't my cuppa tea. :)
The font size for these comments is nice and comfy, tho! (Chrome)
To everybdy who has trouble reading because it's too small/faint: it gets better if you press ctrl and + (and to go back, - ), just maj sure you keep pressing on ctrl when you press + as well. It's way better.
With SO many people complaining about their eyes hurting and getting headaches, surely the GR team will fix this? It's obviously not a *hate the changes* problem only.
I love it! Welcome to the future, Goodreads, you look great. (: So glad those tacky gradients are gone!
There was nothing wrong before. Please give us an option to choose between the previous version and this awful font and color.
I'm sure I'll get used to it in a week or so, (not that there's much choice...).On the other hand, I do think it looks blurry, as if the font is translating poorly to the screen. In addition, if there is such a thing as too high contrast, this might be it.
Cleaner? Maybe. Jury's out. But it does increase eyestrain.
Lauren wrote: "It looks beautiful! People just don't like it because it is new and they have to adjust. But, it's lovely to me. Keep it up Goodreads!!"Alvie wrote: "Why is everyone whinning so much? The font is fine."
Lauren and Alvie, a great number of of the people who 'just don't like it' are using Chrome, Firefox, desktop or laptop, and/or are visually impaired. That would indicate to me that this new change is 1) disparate across different internet browsers, 2) disparate across different mediums, and 3) inaccessible to some with disabilities or impairments. This might be a new concept to you, but perhaps not everyone experiences precisely the same thing as you do.
I can't even use this site now on my laptop. It kills my eyes and I get an almost instant headache. The font is terrible. I don't see any improvement since the update. I'm very disappointed.
I didn't see the version rolled out yesterday that prompted some complaints about readability, but I love the new look!

I really do not give a darn about what it looks like, but I have stopped getting my notifications from buddy reads and friends.... PLEASE, FIX THE NOTIFICATIONS!!!!
I'm a yay vote. I think the new font is much sharper and easier to read. I also like all of the other updates.
Sorry I can't be bothered with screenshots right now, but one thing I've noticed is inconsistent: the little "message xx: by user". On this thread it looks fine to me, message is bold and a good size. On a group thread it is incredibly small and hard to read. And the new green colour blurrs a little when it's that tiny. I'm seeing this on firefox.

Looks good! The serif font is a bit light (as in weight, not color) but other than that it looks much better. Definitely a fan of the color adjustments. I'm using chrome, for what it's worth.

The normal text is also much smaller on group threads, and I'm not sure why. Here, it's too big; there, it's too small. Fix please!
