Get a Goodreads Email Signature!

Posted by Maryana Pinchuk on June 10, 2015

"When you broadcast your book reading voluntarily, it creates moments of fascinating serendipity."

Ever wish you could give more people—beyond just your friends on Goodreads—a glimpse of your favorite books so they can see what stories are currently making you laugh, cry, or bang your head in frustration?

For years, many Goodreads staff members have been doing just that by manually updating their email signatures to show the books they're currently reading. We wanted to showcase that sentiment and hopefully entice more people to come join us in the world's largest community of engaged readers. So, during a recent Hack Day, engineers at Goodreads took a stab at automating this process to make it into a simple, live-updating widget, and we loved the result. We thought that some of you might like to do the same thing, so today we're sharing our widget with you!

Now, any Goodreads member with a public profile can set their email signature to show the cover of the book they've marked as "currently reading."

People who receive your emails will always see the cover of the latest book you're reading, based on the book you most recently added to your Currently Reading shelf. You can find instructions to set up your email signature on your Edit profile page.

We love using this feature in the office to get a glimpse into what our coworkers are reading, and we hope this creates new moments of connection for you, too!

Scott If people don't want it to show, I suppose they can just delete that part when they are composing the message.

Ian Does this mean more email in my inbox?

So true! Or if you are reading a book about how to train your man or woman how to be a better lover....I bet they would love seeing that on the bottom of your email, esp. an email that goes out to their friends or parents!

message 54: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Gaile I'm curious whether there's an option to show title instead of cover.

I assume this only works for people who compose, and read, email in HTML.

I agree D.G.

Thank you for sharing that, Meghan! I really hope it helps because it's such an awesome feature, in my humble opinion. Still working on the kindle app as opposed to using the browser.

I'm going to start emailing a ton of random people everyday just to show my books off, lol! xD JK, but it would be fun.

Dina For heaven's sake!

Why would I do that.. one time, I shared a sexy story cover on facebook (in a way to tell my friends about it).. my mother saw it and almost had a conniption! O.o'

A lovely thought... but, NOT gonna happen with me.

Thank you, Meghan.

I'm so thrilled it works on the apps and "desktop" which is what I usually use anyway and I get to show off the books I'm reading. Seriously, my opinion personally, I Love this feature.

Jaksen No, no, no, no, I don't want this. The world already knows too much about me.

message 61: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Price Okay, it's officially cool. I had to reply to an Amazon email and the first one showed Summer Secrets by Jane Green which I just finished and I went back to that email and it's showing the last book I just added as "currently reading" which is Somebody I Used to Know by David J. Bell by David J. Bell

I love it :)

message 62: by Ben Connolly (new)

Ben Connolly Great. It works for Gmail perfectly well, but not in the Inbox for Gmail app. It simply comes out as plain text.

message 64: by Ramon (new)

Ramon Somoza What about offering authors the possibility to show one or possibly all of their own books in the e-mail signature?
It's good publicity for the author and also publicity for Goodreads. A win-win situation!

message 65: by Tom (new)

Tom Is there a version of this that works for posting on non-Goodreads forums? (Because there are plenty of threads to discuss what we're all reading already.)

I'm having problems with gmail. I've changed my 'currently reading' book a couple of times, but it's still showing up with my original 'currently reading' book on sent emails (not just emails that are being composed). Am I doing something wrong??

message 67: by Leila (new)

Leila I also have a bug on gmail. It worked when I first set it up, but now that I've moved on from the book I was reading at the time of setup, it's not changing. I checked my "sent" messages to confirm since I know the "compose" window doesn't update but the "sent" is supposed to, and my signature is still stuck two books ago, both in the "compose" window and on the sent messages.

I have the same issue. In gmail, it shows the first book I was reading when I set up the signature, both in the "compose" box and in sent messages. I am several books past that now, and I do have a book on my "currently reading" shelf that this signature should be seeing.

I set up the signature using the directions provided by goodreads, using google chrome on a laptop, and I am still using google chrome.

message 69: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I'm another who would be interested in the private profile option!

message 70: by eb (new)

eb So, there's supposed to be a chunk of code to grab for this and add to your signature, right? Nothing shows up for me in the first box when I open this page: https://www.goodreads.com/user/edit?t...

Is this a page glitch? Or am I doing something wrong?

message 71: by Namita (new)

Namita Mohandas To clarify, the cover will appear the same in the composition portion of the email. However, when you send the email, the signature will update and the correct book will appear. Are you seeing the wrong book AFTER you've sent the email, or before?

Has this issue been resolved? Not only am I seeing the original book cover while composing, but my recipient sees the original book picture too.
But when you click on it, it takes you to goodreads and shows you the correct book (the latest under currently reading).

message 72: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Has this feature been discontinued? I use gmail and this worked for awhile, but it is now stuck (on my view AND the view of recipients) on something from like two months ago.

message 73: by Brigid (new)

Brigid Prior The book cover is blurry and hard to read. Can this be corrected? When I make the book "medium" sized, it remains blurry.

message 74: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I am having the issue that others have cited where my email signature is not automatically updating (using Outlook for Windows). I finished a book 2 days ago, it is no longer in my currently reading, but it is still showing up in the signature as currently reading. I saw this comment from a Goodreads moderator: "To clarify, the cover will appear the same in the composition portion of the email. However, when you send the email, the signature will update and the correct book will appear." I went and looked at my actual sent emails and they too were still showing the old book.

message 75: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Sargeant Is the signature not working anymore? All I see now is a blank space. It used to show the book, but it doesn't anymore. Is anyone else having this issue?
