Get a Goodreads Email Signature!
"When you broadcast your book reading voluntarily, it creates moments of fascinating serendipity."
Ever wish you could give more people—beyond just your friends on Goodreads—a glimpse of your favorite books so they can see what stories are currently making you laugh, cry, or bang your head in frustration?
For years, many Goodreads staff members have been doing just that by manually updating their email signatures to show the books they're currently reading. We wanted to showcase that sentiment and hopefully entice more people to come join us in the world's largest community of engaged readers. So, during a recent Hack Day, engineers at Goodreads took a stab at automating this process to make it into a simple, live-updating widget, and we loved the result. We thought that some of you might like to do the same thing, so today we're sharing our widget with you!
Now, any Goodreads member with a public profile can set their email signature to show the cover of the book they've marked as "currently reading."
People who receive your emails will always see the cover of the latest book you're reading, based on the book you most recently added to your Currently Reading shelf. You can find instructions to set up your email signature on your Edit profile page.
We love using this feature in the office to get a glimpse into what our coworkers are reading, and we hope this creates new moments of connection for you, too!

Cute idea but I read too much naughty stuff to add something to my email signature. I can just imagine sending an email to my dad with a cover of a shirtless man! :)
Your description says it will show the last book added to Currently Reading.. maybe a better option would be the last book with reading progress updated, much the same way the currently reading bar on this site will sort the latest update first. Is that what it does now? If not, can it? =)
Love this new feature! But I´ve a bug on gmail.
The instructions says:
"Note: When composing messages in Gmail, the cover may always appear as the book you were reading when you first saved your signature, but recipients will always see the latest book you're reading."
But I´ve changed my 'currently reading' books but the old one appears instead of the new one. :(

"Exactly...why does every site have to be linked to everything else in our lives? I don't want anyone except my GR friends to know what im reading. This is just GR getting its users to advertise for them! No thanks!

"LOL D.G. very true
Steve wrote: "Does it work if one is currently reading multiple titles?"Yes! The signature will show the last book that you've added to your "currently-reading" shelf.

This is great feedback and something that we're thinking about. I'll make sure to pass this along.

To clarify, the cover will appear the same in the composition portion of the email. However, when you send the email, the signature will update and the correct book will appear. Are you seeing the wrong book AFTER you've sent the email, or before?

Goodreads is a business and business gets more people through advertising. However you want to perceive it, it's a pretty cool feature, especially for those who are book reviewers or those who love to show what they're reading while providing a link to that book for other people to look at.
ALSO, it doesn't just provide Goodreads with more people to join, but it helps the authors gain even more exposure -- especially if the person is currently reading an indie book (indie authors need love).
I love this but it doesn't work with my iCloud email :( Any idea when that might be fixed? Or when a version might be available for iCloud?
Will it be the actual edition cover, or the "most popular" cover like you do on FB? (hopefully the former)
When I try adding this with the copy and paste method from the widgets tab, it says:"Currently Reading
Book Cover
Goodreads Logo Get your own email signature"
There are no images.

Same here.
Wish it worked for private profiles, too. I don't mind sharing one book with the world.
Meghan wrote: "Which email provider are each of you using? Is that just how it looks when you paste it into your signature editor, or have you sent a sample email to see how it appears once an email is sent?"I'm using Thunderbird, and I did send a test message to my Gmail account. The signature appeared the same as the quoted text, only without line breaks.
I use Thunderbird as well. I didn't send a test email but I can see that it is just plain text in the box. No coding at all.
In Principle a Good Idea. But with the way GRamazon is treating its users GR doesn't deserve it. One is fucked if one is reading erotic books. Fancy that for your signiture. As it is i have no desire to promote GRamazon to my friends.
Beware of Datamining Companies who come bearing Sentences with ! at the end. It always spells bad news and bad motives.
Steve wrote: "Does it work if one is currently reading multiple titles?"They said that they preview the latest book you added to your currently-reading list...
I prefer the old GR e-mail signature which was the G logo with a link to my GR profile. But it doesn't work with Thunderbird.
Wonderperson89 wrote: "In Principle a Good Idea. But with the way GRamazon is treating its users GR doesn't deserve it. One is fucked if one is reading erotic books. Fancy that for your signiture."So don't use it in that case. What do you expect GR to do about it?

"Exactly! I don't want anyone else outside GR to know I read some really disturbing dark erotica hahah!

"I totally know what you mean, my Mum's already suspicious about the books I bring into the house (that I don't manage to hide) that have rather hawt naked male torsos on the front....
I hope a feature can be added that allows people with private profiles to do this. I've got no problem with sending an e-mail saying what I'm reading to another person, and I've had too many issues with my profile being public to want to change it now for this one neat feature :/
Thanks for the very cool feature! I look forward to getting e-mails from other people and learning what they're up to reading-wise.It would be awesome if there were a way to select which book shows instead of having it automated. I'm typically juggling 6-9 books but would want to highlight only one or two of them. Of course, since I have a private profile, I guess the matter is moot anyway.

"Exactly what I thought D.G :)
Scarletine wrote: " I don't want anyone except my GR friends to know what im reading."Yup. Moreover, I would not want my clients demanding why I`m reading when I should be doing their texts at twice the speed I do. Deadlines are tight as it is.
Besides, I suspect most of the people I`m communicating with via e-mail would not be ecstatic about the surplus info they have not asked for.

Obviously your choice of reading does not need to be further explored. So what? You do not want to advertise it? Then don't. It is your choice every which way, both what you are reading, and wether to advertise it.

I tried a test and it's only showing this:
Currently Reading
Get your own email signature
But no image or links or anything. I tried it with my personal Gmail and it worked great but it's not working on my primary email that I use for blogging (iCloud). No images come up or anything, just plain text and it doesn't even show a title or anything. :(

"Haha! Thats so me!
*YAY* It worked!! I thought it was so cool the first time I saw it which I believe was from a Goodreads support team members email reply to me. Now I have it too!! LOVE IT :D I sent myself a test email from the laptop (yes, I had to drag it out to do this), then opened the email in the Gmail app and the app that automatically comes with the phone and it worked for both with the pictures and link to goodreads.
For anyone who may be having issues, I use google chrome and just followed the steps exactly as Goodreads has in the link above.
And for those who wish for it, but don't want some books to be seen, maybe shut the signature off in those emails for those times you don't want a book you're reading to be seen.
Somebody said who still uses email. I do all the time and many others do. Now I just want to email everyone to show off the books and the Goodreads link, lol.
We'll see how this goes.....very cool.
Ok, got it to work for emailing from the laptop but is there a way to get it to show up when you send email from devices? That part isn't working. Sent my ex three. One from the phone pre-installed email app and nothing, one from google "inbox" app and nothing, third from the laptop and he just replied with, "It showed up now. Pretty cool!. So as it stands now it seems it will only work if you send an email from a desktop or laptop email? Very cool though. Better if it can be used from all devices.
Sorry for all the posts. Just trying to get this figured out on different devices. Here's what I've come up with using Google/Gmail/Chrome in browser and in apps.Laptop: Was the easiest. Go into setting and simply follow the instructions on the Goodreads link. It worked immediately with no issues.
iPhone: Didn't work at first. Didn't work through the iPhone pre-installed email app at all so I went to my "Gmail" and "Inbox" apps. in the "Gmail" app just hit the gear to get to settings, where you see your signature; It say "mobile signature", turn it off so it syncs with your laptop signature.
On kindle: Won't work in the pre-install app for K-Fire so I tried it in the Gmail K-Fire browser and did the same thing I did on the laptop. It worked.
Basically, this could work well for some books we do want to share and some we don't. For those who are sending an email to somebody whom you don't want to see the book you're "Currently reading" just use the email accounts where this option doesn't work. RE: Message of Hot guy on cover sent with an e-mail to dad, lol.
For those whom you 'do' want to share it with, just send it from the apps.
I always alternate anyway, so that isn't too much to deal with, but I love this so most of my emails will be sent from the places where this will link up. Worked when I sent tests to myself and my ex let me know which worked and which didn't.
Okay, I 'really' hope that helped anyone interested in this and having issues and I do apologize for all the long posts. I LOVE figuring these things out. Brain puzzles......
~*Good Luck, Have Fun, & Happy Reading*~ Thank you Goodreads! Somebody on this thread "doesn't want to promo books for Goodeads" *coughWBcough*, but I love sharing my books every chance I can. ;)
