Goodreads on Kindle E-readers Just Got Even Better! (U.S., Canada, & Australia)
After we launched Goodreads on Kindle e-readers, one of the requests we heard most from readers was, “When will we be able to share progress updates?” Starting today, the answer is now! This is just one of the many features now available on the new Kindle, the Kindle Voyage and the second generation Kindle Paperwhite, in the United States, Canada and Australia.
For all of you clamoring for the ability to add a book to your Goodreads shelves, we haven’t forgotten you either. Just go to your Kindle device library and tap and hold on any book to shelve it on Goodreads.
Being able to see what your friends think of a book – and which of your friends are reading a book - is one of the most popular features on Goodreads. Now you can not only see your friends’ reviews but also their ratings, shelves and progress updates on any book on Goodreads on your Kindle e-reader.
The updated version of Goodreads is available in a free, over-the-air software update delivered automatically on the new Kindle, the Kindle Voyage, and the second generation Kindle Paperwhite in the United States, Canada, and Australia in the coming weeks. Can’t wait? You can also visit www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates to download it.
We don’t have details to share about other Kindle e-readers or introducing Goodreads on Kindle to members of other countries at this time, but our goal is to provide the Goodreads on Kindle experience to as many of our members as possible. In the meantime, other options to consider are Goodreads on our iPhone/iPad app or our Android app, available from the Amazon Appstore for Android or from Google Play.

So I have 2 kindles (the keyboard and the fire) and neither of them get this. Also the other option is the app ... have you used the app? It BLOWS. It needs a major update. Can't use spoiler tags, can't go to last comment seen, try scrolling through a thread with a thousand comments. You give up fast.

Quite frankly I am more interested in when the Kindle reader app for Windows 8 will get its long overdue update including this feature as well as necessary bug-fixes?This does not have much to do with the Goodreads team off course but maybe someone from Amazon might read this (wishful thinking:-))
Oh, while I am in complaining mode. When do we get a Windows 8 Goodreads app?

Which comes from Amazon. So anything not provided by Amazon won't be able to be updated using the function.
Why only the 2nd gen Kindles and why only for 3 countries? It is not 2014 at all. And it is not rocket science or anything.
The most ridiculous part is to announce this as if it is a major change for ALL users from ALL OVER THE WORLD.
You could've just email by targeting the users based on location without upsetting the rest.
I wish I could connect to Goodreads on my Kindle WITHOUT Wifi, but with 3G, as when we connect to the Amazon store!
Ryan wrote: "Only the second gen Paperwhite? That's disappointing."I agree..very disappointing. I love my kindle paperwhite and have no reason to upgrade it yet. There are going to be updates for older kindles?? It is a funny thing, if you think about it. Older kindle users are probably the ones who sent you guys all those requests...those of us who have used them for a while now and have things we would like to see improved. For you to only update the new editions seems counter productive.
hey guys , that update cancels Duokan and you won't be able to go back to Duokan till the next update of Dukan.
Only 2nd generation paperwhite? Seems like a dick move to me. I don't know which software/language they use to program the Kindle but are you telling me that older Kindles are not capable of displaying another screen and posting/retrieving requests? Feels more like a marketing thing to force people to buy a new one.

I'm in Canada and a Kobo user also. I borrow a lot of ebooks from the library and Kindles are incompatible with our library system. I've had my Kobo for a couple of years and no problems, no complaints and I'l stick with it. No desire for a Kindle or, for that matter, anything from Amazon.
Is Overdrive compatible with Kobo in the US? Right now I have to select kindle format which throws me to Amazon, sometimes logged in sometimes not, then select which kindle or iPad I want the book to go to, then wait for cloud to download it onto my preferred device. It would be awesome if I could one click from kobo just like a purchase.
What about adding a way to update the date read option? And maybe the numbers of times read for those of us that reread? I'd mostly just like to be able to use it more as the site or the phone app
I like the addition of the share feature, but I wish the ap would allow you to select the series beside the titles like you can on the website. Hopefully that will be in the next upgrade.
Christine said... No desire for a Kindle or, for that matter, anything from Amazon. Like or lump, Christine, Goodreads is part of Amazon, now. I hope they treat it with care, and don't subvert it for their commercial goals. Right now it's a friendly and useful place for indie authors to hang out. This app adds nothing to the experience, as far as I can tell, and has been implemented in a scrappy and narrow way.
I'm struggling - no miffed - to understand why this (simple) feature isn't going to be available in the UK. If you've gone out and bought a Kindle Voyage... you know, the expensive premium e-reader, you kinda expect to have all the features. Again, the UK is missing out.
how come this update can't come to all kindles via wifi? I just don't get it why it has to be country specific...
I'm with Phil and Abby.Tell us about the UK, surely there can be no copyright problems etc. so why not just release it for us too? :)

It would be nice to know "why"...
when a bulk of ereaders are on non kindle devices like smartphones and tablets that come with data through cell phone plans. it would be nice to see a droid version for this.
Well, fuck you too, Amazon. There's zero technical difference between Paperwhite 1 and 2, and once again, the update is not available for PW1. Okay then, I guess we'll have to wait half a year or so as usual and then PW1 might get it too.
Unfortunately, my initial excitement was premature and has melted away, as it seems the new features aren't working.A few days ago I tried to add a book to my "Currently Reading" shelf, but it never got there.
Today I tried to update the book I just finished reading, but received an error message that told me to "Try again Later", instead.
Shelly wrote: "Am Cannon shelly from Usa, i am sharing about my experience and testimony online in search of a spell caster that will restore my marriage and make me live a happy life. I was introduced to a spel..."Thank you for this. Best laugh I had all morning.
Love the update! I like that I can add to "Currently reading" from "About the book" and other features :)
are there plans to be able to change the formatting so it can be left justified? Center justify is just awful for reading...
Honestly you all are not missing anything, the app still does not include user shelves. Until those are added this app is absolutely useless to me.
I tried to do a manual update and it keeps telling me that there's not enough space on my kindle. I shouldn't have to erase almost half of my books on my kindle, just so it can update. Not Cool!
I think it is great, not perfect (not all the apps/devices, only Amazon provided books) but still very nice.
Would love to use Goodreads more on my 2nd-gen Kindle Paperwhite but what holds me back is that I'm not allowed to access it on 3G. That would be my biggest request.
I'm getting an error every time I try to update my reading progress from within a book. Says it can't be updated right now. Try again later. :(

Fires are not integrated with Goodreads. They use different technology because they are tablet based. Only the e-readers are integrated with Goodreads.
This is not fair. Forget about India the update has not come even in UK. And presently the goodreads in Kindle without these features is pretty useless.
I'm not clear on how you actually update the progress of the book you are reading. I see a "Share" button at the top, but it's greyed out. Am I missing something?
LindaK wrote: "Cheri wrote: "The updating from within the book only works for books purchased through Amazon."No you can update a library book that is in kindle format as well. I just did it."
How did you made it? mine continues to tell me error

Users should be able to post progress updates to Goodreads from within a Kindle book (please make sure you are updated to v4.1.1 or higher) and other cool new features (see link to blog post below). We're also releasing some cool new features very soon, so look out for an update very soon!

This update goes out to the new Kindle, the Kindle Voyage, and the second generation Kindle Paperwhite. Unfortunately, we didn't have the resources to push this update to the Kindle Keyboard. The Fire devices get updates on a different schedule than e-readers--we're releasing an update for Fire with some new features very soon!
Hooray! Who cares about the rest of the world, right? When I read the email about the GR update for Kindle, I thought "about time". So I click on the link to find out more information, and I see it's only for US, Canada and Australia!!! Why did you send the email out to everyone when it relates only to a minor part of the world??
So I guess the Goodreads app in my Kindle will remain as useless as it was before all the excitement.
I've just had an update to my Kindle Paperwhite - got excited - thought I'd see a lovely big G on the menu! Alas, still waiting .....
This is unexpected. I commented earlier about it not being fair that the update doesn't roll out outside US, Canada and Australia. But surprisingly I got the new feature - share progress updates on Goodreads directly via Kindle - in my Kindle paperwhite after the latest update!! The update has at least been provided to Indian users. Awesome :)
